Harold and the Purple Crayon: Zachary Levi to Lead Sony’s Live-Action Film

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures is currently in the process of developing a live-action film adaptation of Crockett Johnson’s popular children’s book titled Harold and the Purple Crayon with Shazam! star Zachary Levi attached to star in the project.

The film adaptation will be penned by writing duo David Guion and Michael Handelman (Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb). It will be produced by John Davis through his Davis Entertainment banner. In 2010, Warner Bros. and Amblin Entertainment previously attempted to adapt the popular book into film.

First published in 1955, Harold and the Purple Crayon centered around the story of a four-year-old boy who, with the power of his crayon, created worlds around him. The book was then followed by six other books and was also adapted into a TV series by HBO in 2001-2002.

Levi is best known for his superhero role in DC Films’ Shazam! which grossed $365 million at the worldwide box office. He also first gained recognition as the lead star in NBC’s long-running spy comedy series Chuck which ran on air for five seasons from 2007-2012. For his performance in the 2016 play She Loves Me, Levi earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical.  He will next be seen in American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story, The Unbreakable Boy, and the highly-anticipated Shazam sequel.
