Cinderella Takes Over the Charts

Buena Vista Home Entertainment’s new special edition of Cinderella glided to the top of the national video sales charts for the week ending October 9, selling 3.2 million units, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The 55-year-old animated classic sold more than twice as many DVDs as both Universal’s The Interpreter and Sony/MGM’s The Amityville Horror combined. Based on an average street price of $20, Cinderella in one week has generated consumer spending of more than $60 million.

Cinderella knocked last week’s top seller, 20th Century Fox’s Robots, to the No. 2 spot on VideoScan’s First Alert DVD sales chart. But the futuristic animated feature still finished ahead of The Interpreter and The Amityville Horror, which debuted on the chart at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.

The Interpreter was No. 1 on Home Media Retailing’s video rental chart for the week, with estimated rental earnings of $8.02 million. The Amityville Horror bowed at No. 3, just behind last week’s top renter, Paramount’s The Longest Yard.
