Another Shrek Movie on the Way?

Just a day after the announcement that Merlin and DreamWorks Animation are developing a “Shrek” attraction called “Far Far Away Adventure” in London, DWA’s CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg hinted in an interview with the Fox Business Network (via Variety) that another “Shrek” movie might be on the way as well.

Katzenberg told the Fox Business Network in an interview that will air later today, “We like to let them have a little bit of time to rest, but I think you can be confident that we’ll have another chapter in the Shrek series. We’re not finished, and more importantly, neither is he.”

The previous installment Shrek Forever After opened in May 2010 and though it only grossed $239 million domestically, less than the previous three movies, it grossed $750 million worldwide. It was followed 17 months later by the Puss in Boots spin-off which also fared better overseas than in North America. Even though the franchise has shown signs of diminishing returns in the States, the nearly $3 billion it has grossed between 2001 and 2010 certainly shows that making another movie would be lucrative.

Meanwhile, the “Shrek” attraction scheduled to open in summer of 2015 will be the first of six such attractions that will be rolled out worldwide over the next nine years, giving DreamWorks Animation another reason to try to keep developing movies featuring the characters from their most popular franchise.
