Elizabeth Banks to Direct and Star in Universal’s Invisible Woman

According to Deadline, Universal Pictures is currently in the process of developing a new film titled Invisible Woman with Elizabeth Banks set to helm and star in the film. This marks the latest collaboration between Banks and the studio, who have worked together on the blockbuster film franchise Pitch Perfect. Erin Cressida Wilson (The Girl on the Train) wrote the current draft.

This project also comes three months ahead of the premiere of Universal and Blumhouse’s The Invisible Man which stars Emmy winner Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Oliver Jackson-Cohen (The Haunting of Hill House). The Leigh Whannell-directed film follows the story of a woman who has escaped from her abusive wealthy husband. But when Cecilia’s abusive ex (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) commits suicide and leaves her a generous portion of his vast fortune, Cecilia suspects his death was a hoax and she fears that he’s still lurking around her.

Based on the studio’s classic monster character, Invisible Woman was from an original pitch by Banks, who will also be serving as a producer along with husband Max Handelman through their Brownstone Productions banner. The film will be executive produced by Brownstone’s Alison Small.

In 1940, Universal had released a sci-fi comedy titled The Invisible Woman which starred Virginia Bruce as the titular character. It is still unclear what genre Banks’ film will be and if it will be similar to the original or not because plot details for the film are being kept under wraps but it is reportedly very different from the upcoming sci-fi horror film The Invisible Man.

Invisible Woman will be the newest addition to the list of Universal’s upcoming monster projects which includes: Dexter Fletcher’s film about Dracula henchman Renfield and Paul Feig’s Dark Army.
