Spider-Verse’s Chris Miller Teases Sony’s Marvel TV Universe

Spider-Verse EP Chris Miller Teases Sony’s Marvel TV Universe

Last April, it was reported that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse executive producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller had signed on to develop Sony‘s very own Marvel TV Universe, comprised of shows based on the studio’s Marvel characters. Speaking at TCA (via Deadline), Miller offered a short update on the development status of their big project, revealing that it may take a little longer before they can make any official announcements about the project.

“We are developing a handful of live-action shows using Sony’s Marvel characters, of which there are like 900 characters,” Miller said. “We’re figuring out a way to develop the shows so that each are their own unique experience but are also related.”

Miller added, “We’ve been talking to a lot of potential teammates for trying to do something not like anything else that’s been done on television. It’ll be a little while before it all comes together and is on the air, but I think it is going to be something really special. Hopefully we’ll know in the next few months where it’ll be and what the schedule will be,”

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creative minds behind The LEGO Movie and 21 Jump Street, brought their unique talents to a fresh vision of a different Spider-Man Universe, with a groundbreaking visual style that’s the first of its kind. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduced Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where more than one can wear the mask.

Due to the massive success of Into the Spider-Verse, Lord and Miller have successfully landed a huge nine-figure five-year deal with Sony. The deal with the studio will allow Lord and Miller to create and develop comedy and drama projects for broadcast, cable, and streaming. The duo will also supervise projects from other writers, on top of developing television series based on Sony’s Marvel characters.

The film was a box office smash, grossing over $375 million at the box office on a budget of $90 million and earned rave reviews from critics for its animation, story, characters, humor and voice cast and went on to win the Best Animated Feature award at the Golden Globes and Academy Awards. A sequel, animated TV spin-offs and film spin-offs entitled Spider-Women are all currently in development, with Mulaney also having pitched a Spider-Ham solo film.
