The Batman Taps Oscar-Nominated Cinematographer Greig Fraser

Matt Reeves’ long-in-development The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, has just added Oscar-nominated cinematographer Greig Fraser to its crew, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Frasier was nominated for an Oscar for his work on Garth Davis’ 2016 biographical drama Lion, but is also known for his work on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Zero Dark Thirty, Vice, Foxcatcher, and Reeves’ own Let Me In. He’s also shooting Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming Dune.

“It’s great to be working with Matt again,” Fraser told The Hollywood Reporter. “The Batman franchise is iconic and it’s a privilege to now be able to visualize it in my own way. Especially with the cumulative creative potential of all the talent and technicians we have in front of and behind the camera.”

The Batman has been in development at Warner Bros. since 2015 when Ben Affleck signed on to the DCEU, with various script drafts by Affleck and Geoff Johns being submitted to the studio. Affleck was attached to direct for a while before stepping down due to being overwhelmed with the project. Reeves (War for the Planet of the Apes) signed on to helm about a month after Affleck’s directorial departure with the added caveat that he’d get to rewrite the script from scratch.

Reeves’ story has been described as a character-driven project focusing on Batman’s experiences as the world’s greatest detective. The filmmaker has also said to expect a “Rogue’s Gallery” of villains in the movie.

The Batman is scheduled to be released on June 25, 2021.
