James Gunn Says Talks Are Happening About a Brightburn Sequel

It’s been an interesting year for James Gunn. The Guardians of the Galaxy writer/director was fired from Disney last summer, only to be hired away by Warner Bros. for The Suicide Squad, then hired back by Disney so he can continue the Guardians franchise with Vol. 3. Amidst all this turmoil, Gunn produced a superhero film of a different sort, the villain origin/horror story Brightburn.

Though the film didn’t exactly make waves at the box office, Gunn is considering making a sequel to the film… eventually. In a post on Instagram mourning the loss of Mad Magazine, a commenter asked the filmmaker about the possibility of returning to the world of Brightburn.

I think I’m tied up for the next few years with Suicide Squad and then Guardians, but we’re talking about the sequel,” Gunn replied (h/t EW).

Brightburn was directed by David Yarovesky (The Hive) and written by Mark Gunn & Brian Gunn. Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger GamesPitch Perfect) starred alongside David Denman (13 HoursThe Office), Jackson A. Dunn (Shameless), Matt Jones (Mom) and Meredith Hagner (Younger).

Gunn produced with executive producers Mark Gunn, Brian Gunn, Dan Clifton, Simon Hatt, and Nic Crawley. The H Collective fully financed the feature and produced alongside Gunn’s company, Troll Court Entertainment. Screen Gems released the film over Memorial Day weekend this year, where it took in roughly $17 million on a $6 million budget.
