Adapted from a script written 25 years ago that was based on Robert Rodriguez’s experiences in a Medical Research Facility, Red 11 is a horror/thriller set in a dark, twisted version of the Legal Drug Research world. At these Facilities, young guys become Lab Rats to make quick money, but our hero RED 11 is here to buy his way out of a huge debt to the tune of $7,000. This story shows the quirks, characters, and comedy of Robert’s experiences of being a human Lab Rat, but with a sci fi and horror twist, because while under the influence of experimental drugs, Red 11 doesn’t know if what’s in front of him is fact or fiction.

Rodriguez has seen large increases in his budgets over the years, namely with his most recent project Alita: Battle Angel, which cost approximately $170 million to make, but he originally came into the spotlight with the acclaimed 1992 neo-Western action pic El Mariachi, which he made on a low $7,000 budget. Interestingly, half of the money he raised for that film’s budget was acquired through participating in clinical medical trials during his time living in Austin, Texas, which would provide the inspiration for Red 11‘s story.
The 50-year-old filmmaker co-wrote the script with his son Racer Max, who also appears in the film alongside his brother Rebel, and shot the film during his time working on the Fox sci-fi blockbuster. His experience working on the projects simultaneously is the subject of a six-part docu-series entitled Rebel without a Crew: The Robert Rodriguez Film School, which will debut at a Masterclass hosted by Rodriguez alongside a screening of the film at South by Southwest on March 12.
