HBO’s Space Comedy Pilot Avenue 5 Adds Nikki Amuka-Bird

Following the addition of Josh Gad (Frozen 2), Deadline reports that BAFTA-nominated actress Nikki Amuka-Bird (NW) has officially signed on to join the cast of HBO’s space comedy Avenue 5. The pilot is written and executive produced by Veep creator Armando Iannucci.

Amuka-Bird will be portraying the role of Rav Muclair, Earth’s head of Judd Mission Control. She is described as someone who’s very intelligent but gets frustrated often due to lack of control. Her character description reads: “Rav is racked with guilt over having sent her two best friends into space in an attempt to fix their failing marriage.”

The pilot will also star Golden Globe-winning actor Hugh Laurie (House) as Ryan Clark, the captain of the titular Avenue 5, Zach Woods (Silicon Valley) as Matt Spencer and Josh Gad as Herman Judd along with BAFTA winner Rebecca Front (The Thick of It) and Suzy Nakamura (Dr. Ken).

HBO has given Avenue 5 a pilot commitment and ordered additional scripts. However, the network has yet to give the project a series order.

Amuka-Bird is best known for her critically-acclaimed role as Natalie Blake in BBC One’s NW which had earned her a BAFTA nomination for Best Actress. She recently appeared in the 2018 biopic drama film A Private War opposite Rosamund Pike. Her TV credits include: Survivors, Small Island, Luther, Doctor Who and Hard Sun. She will next be seen in the forthcoming BBC One miniseries titled Gold Digger starring alongside Emmy winner Julia Ormond (Temple Grandin) and Ben Barnes (Westworld).
