Preview and Projections for the Weekend
of July 29, 2005
By Edward Douglas -
Greetings and welcome back to the Weekend
Warrior, your weekly guide to the weekend's new movies. Tune in every
Tuesday for the latest look at the upcoming weekend, and then check
back on Friday for any last minute updates and reviews.
And a shout-out this week to Jim Fredrick, a trailer-cuttin’ Golden
God, who I’ll have to learn to listen to more often. :)
WEEKEND PROJECTIONS - Final Update 7.28.05
How do you follow a week when a Michael Bay movie doesn’t completely suck
and yet… no one goes to see it? I know. How about putting out three high
concept movies with lame titles starring mid-level stars? How about putting
Jamie Foxx and Jessica Biel in jet planes, call it something like Stealth,
and have Rob Cohen turn it into The Fast and the Furious of the air?
How about teaming John Cusack and Diane (Unfaithful) Lane in a romantic
comedy in which they Must Love Dogs? (Leaving all the bestiality jokes
for this week’s limited release The Aristocrats,
please.) Or better yet, put Disney career player Kurt Russell into a family
superhero movie and call it something like Sky High?
Lousy titles aside, Stealth may do the most businss only because it's
the most visible of the new movies, and
it
should
take
the
top
spot even though there isn’t
that much excitement about a movie from the director who makes Michael Bay seem
subtle. Sky
High will
try
to
capitalize
on
the
recent success of Fantastic Four, but it’s one of those family films that
can do far better than expected (like Spy Kids) or far worse (like Thunderbirds). Must
Love Dogs has an open market being the only movie geared specifically towards
women, so it will be vying for a strong fourth place behind the stronger late
summer
films Charlie
and the Chocolate Factory and Wedding Crashers. Either way, the market
seems too crowded for anything remotely questionable, and while we can grumble
that none of the new movies look that great, at least this is the first weekend
in months with no remakes or sequels, right?

STEALTH (Sony/Columbia
Pictures)
Starring: Josh Lucas, Jessica Biel, Jamie Foxx, Sam Shepard, Joe Morton, Richard
Roxburgh, Ian Bliss, Megan Gale, Ebon Moss-Bachrach
Directed by: Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious, xXx, The Skulls)
Genres: Action, Drama, Thriller
Rated PG-13
Theatre Count: 3,495
Tagline: “Fear the Sky” (Boy, that’s bad.)
Mini-Review: Sure, it's a bad movie with lame characters and ridiculous
military/scientific technobabble which doesn't make sense, but you have to
admire Cohen's amazing CG plane action and in-air cinematography. You also
have to watch as jaw-agape, he throws away millions of dollars in exorbitant
sequences of things blowing up. Then again, Team
America was supposed to save us from movies like this. Rating: 5
out of 10
Three pilots taking part in a secret military program are assigned
to train a jet plane piloted by artificial intelligence in various
air maneuvers, but the
program hits a snag when the plane develops its own warped consciousness,
and it tries to start World War III.
Director Rob Cohen is a bit like Michael Bay in that there are
movie fans who love his action-packed movies, and those who think
he is
a hack. Then again, maybe that’s the film critic in me speaking. He certainly
earned a lot of respect with his 2001 hit The Fast and the Furious,
and even more when he walked away from the easy money of doing a sequel
to do the action movie XXX with his Fast and Furious star
Vin Diesel. Unlike The Island, Cohen’s latest foray doesn’t
seem to be too much of a departure from his earlier films. Stealth moves
the fast-paced action up into the air with secret military stealth
planes, something which may be more pertinent to today’s society,
thought it might not have as much resonance with the teen audience
that flocked
to The Fast and the Furious, which made twice as much opening
weekend as most expected, thanks to its amazing car racing action
sequences.
Oddly, the movie is derived from a screenplay by W.D. Richter,
a screenwriter who wrote some big movies in the ‘70s and ’80s, but hasn’t had a movie
produced since 1995’s Home for the Holidays.
We may never know if Cohen tried to get Vin Diesel to star as one
of the jet pilots, because instead, he snagged one of 2004’s hottest
stars, Jamie Foxx. After his romantic comedy Breakin’ All the
Rules bombed last
summer, Foxx turned things around by co-starring with Tom Cruise in Michael
Mann’s Collateral, an action-thriller sleeper hit which got Foxx
a supporting actor Oscar nomination. That was only the appetizer for
what would
be Foxx’s biggest success of his career, playing Ray Charles in Taylor Hackford’s
biodrama Ray, which did decently even before Foxx began sweeping
the Best Actor categories in all the awards before receiving a well-deserved
Oscar earlier this year. Because of the nature of this sort of computer-effects
movie, Foxx filmed Stealth before even starting on Ray,
and it’s probably not the greatest way to follow-up an Oscar caliber
performance, though could help solidify his name as a box office draw
regardless of
genre if it does well. He may want to have a talk with Hilary Swank,
who may still
regret doing The Core, and god only knows what her Affair of the
Necklace co-star Adrien Brody was thinking by doing The Singing Detective after
his own Oscar win. Another thing that might put off Foxx’s newfound fans
is the fact that he’s not really the lead in the movie, as he plays second
fiddle to the action and effects.
Although she hasn’t done anything nearly as awards-worthy, Jessica Biel
first got attention as the eldest daughter on the WB show “Seventh Heaven” before
appearing in movies like Summer Catch. In 2003, she starred
in the hit remake of Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,
but that success was matched by the disappointing showing of the
threequel Blade: Trinity last December. The third part of
the high-flyin’ trio
is Josh Lucas, whose biggest movies so far have been The Hulk and
the romantic comedy Sweet Home Alabama with Reese Witherspoon;
it may be enough to get him recognized if not quite much of a draw.
Either way, Sony is really marketing the film more on Cohen’s rep
than on any of the actors.

| This week’s WARRIOR’S PICK is THE ARISTOCRATS (THINKFilm), a documentary by Paul Provenza and Penn Jillette about a racy joke that has become legendary among comedians. Over the course of the film, over 100 popular comics including Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, Howie Mandel and yes, even Carrot Top, tell their own variation of the joke, explaining the history and analyzing why it’s considered so funny. The movie was considered too racy and controversial even to get an MPAA rating. MY REVIEW |
