By Edward Douglas -
Greetings and welcome back to the
Weekend Warrior, your weekly guide to the weekend’s new movies.
Tune in every Tuesday for the latest look at the upcoming weekend,
and then check back on Friday for any last minute updates.
WEEKEND PROJECTIONS - updated 2.26.04
Despite the release of four new movies, only one of them has made one of the
biggest impacts on the film industry in well over a decade. In The Passion
of The Christ, Mel Gibson presents the last twelve hours in the life of
the religious figure, Jesus. Having generated controversy and an unprecedented
grassroots marketing campaign, it will easily take the top spot with around
$40 million this weekend, although it should also do well when it opens this
coming Ash Wednesday. It’s hard to believe, but there are other movies this
weekend, too! Ashley Judd returns to the genre that made her famous, as she
teams with Samuel L. Jackson for the psychological thriller, Twisted,
that will probably be mostly ignored. Fourteen years after the hit movie, Dirty
Dancing: Havana Nights recreates the 80’s classic in a new setting, 1958
Cuba, as a teen girl finds romance in the world of the Cuban dance scene. Oddly,
this could end up being this weekend’s wild card, despite not having near the
star power of the other movies. Two years after Super Troopers, the
Broken Lizard comedy troupe returns with their latest, Club Dread, a
humorous horror film set in a tropical resort; like their last film, it will
likely end up near the bottom of the Top 10. In general, this weekend will
be all about what should be one of the biggest religious film events of all
time, but expect most of the movies to get hit on Sunday night by the Academy
Awards.

BROKEN LIZARD’S CLUB
DREAD (Fox Searchlight)
Starring: Bill Paxton, Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul
Soter, Erik Stolhanske, Tony Amendola, Julio Bekhor, Brittany Ann Daniel, M.C.
Gainey, Jordan Ladd, Samm Levine, Elena Lyons, Daniel Montgomery, Lindsay Price,
Tanja Reichert
Directed by: Jay Chandraskehar (Super Troopers)
Rated R
Tagline: “A vacation to die for”
After spoofing state police in Super Troopers,
the Broken Lizard troupe returns with a horror mystery set in a island resort
owned by former rock star, Coconut Pete (Bill Paxton). Everyone is a suspect
when dead bodies start turning up all over the tropical paradise, but can the
wacky, drugged-out and over-sexed staff of the resort work together to solve
the murders and return to their partying ways?
The Broken Lizard troupe is a comedy group like Monty Python, The Kids in the
Hall or the Upright Citizen’s Brigade made up of five members, based in New
York and Los Angeles, who have been performing together since 1991. Unlike
those other famous troupes, they didn’t originate from a television show, but
they’ve performed in New York and the college circuit for many years before
producing their first feature film, Puddle Cruiser, in 1996. Their last
movie, 2002’s Super Troopers, got the group their most attention, opening
over a busy Presidents Day weekend two years ago and ending up near the bottom
of the Top 10 with $6.2 million, the lowest opening of five new movies.
In Super Troopers, the troupe was joined by actor Brian Cox, and for Club
Dread, they bring Bill Paxton on board as the director of the resort facility.
Paxton has the honor of appearing in one of the biggest movies of all time,
James Cameron’s Titanic, but he has also appeared in a variety of movies
both big and small, including Tombstone and Twister. Paxton’s
last major film was his directorial debut, Frailty, an inventive
psychological horror movie that wasn’t able to find an audience in theatres
despite critical praise. His name isn’t even being mentioned to help promote
this comedy.
The question is whether the Broken Lizard’s college age fans have stuck around
waiting for their next movie, considering that Super Troopers only did
moderately well. Club Dread’s premise is not nearly as appealing, since
the Scary Movie franchise has more than covered the humor in horror,
and this comes across off as little more than rehash. Fox Searchlight hasn’t
promoted the movie that well, maybe because there doesn’t seem to be many funny
gags in the commercials. Only a few weeks ago, the movie even got into trouble
when Club Med, the venerable tourist resort on which the movie’s title is based
took out an injunction against Fox Searchlight, demanding that they destroy
all prints and posters. Apparently, the case has since been thrown out.
Last spring, two movies were set in resort/vacation spots. Neither did well.
The first of them, Cuba Gooding’s unfortunate comedy, Boat Trip, set on
a gay cruise, was dubbed one of the worst films of the year, and it did appropriately
bad. When producers Bunim-Murray, creators of the reality show “The Real World” tried
to bring reality television to the movies, they made the inexpensive spring
break movie, The Real Cancun,
about a bunch of over-sexed drunken teens in paradise. Released only a few
months after filming, its disastrous opening proved that the kids would rather
experience the real thing than sit in a theatre and watch it. Club Dread’s
poorly conceived web site even looks like The Real Cancun web site,
and the movie looks a bit too much like last year’s video game based horror
movie, House of the Dead,
yet another flop.
Club Dread doesn’t look like it offers anything new to the market,
nor anything that college age males might pick over last week’s comedy, Eurotrip,
which has received good word-of-mouth despite its poor opening. The
Broken Lizard’s sophomore effort should follow suit with a weak opening
of around $5 million and a low placement in the Top 10.

DIRTY
DANCING: HAVANA NIGHTS (Lions
Gate Films/Miramax)
Starring: Romola Garai, Diego Luna, Mika Boorem, Polly Cusumano, Patrick Swayze,
Sela Ward, January Jones, René Lavan, Jonathan Jackson
Directed by: Guy Ferland (The Babysitter, Telling
Lies in America)
Rated PG-13
Tagline: “Have the time of your life…all over again.”
"Reimagining" the
classic 1987 romance, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights follows
the story of an 18-year-old girl named Katey (Romola Garai)
transplanted in Havana, Cuba when her father gets a job there
in 1958. Outcast from the other American teens, Katey is drawn
to the seductive world of the sexy waiter named Javier (Diego
Luna), who convinces her to be his dance partner in a competition
at Havana’s hottest nightclub/casino, The Palace. The steamy
romance grows despite the brewing climate of revolution in
the country.
Based on events in the life of producer/choreographer Joann Jensen, it seems
like an opportune time for a remake combining romance and dance to do well,
considering how well other dance-related movies have done in the last few months. Havana
Nights has the added benefit of being based on one of the more successful
women’s movies of the 80’s, as the original Dirty Dancing made over
$150 million worldwide.
Originally, Havana
Nights was rumored to star Latin sensation Ricky Martin
and Star Wars’ Natalie Portman, but instead, the role
originally played by Jennifer Grey was filled by young British
actress, Romola Garai. Having starred in low-key films like I
Capture the Castle and Nicholas
Nickleby, Garai is fairly unknown in the States,
so the bigger draw of the movie would have to be her Latin
co-star, Diego Luna. Despite being a known star in his native
Mexico, Luna first got attention in the States with Alfonso
Cuaron’s Y Tu Mama Tambien,
an appearance that made him instantly ultra-hot. After smaller
roles in Salma Hayek’s Frida and Kevin Costner’s Open Range, Luna
is looking to break out as a romantic lead playing the love
interest, Javier. Although he may not have found a younger
female audience, having appeared mainly in R-rated fare,
Luna has the right look and personality to become very popular.
The only original returning cast member, Patrick Swayze does
make an appearance in the movie, likely reprising the same
dance instructor he played in the original, albeit with a
smaller role.
No question that dance movies are hot right now. In the last two months, two
movies--Jessica Alba’s Honey and the hip hop
dance film, You Got Served--did
much better than most people expected. With no name stars and low expectations, You
Got Served surprised many by taking the top spot at the box office last
month, while doubling its production budget in its opening weekend. Likewise, Honey did
very well opening weekend although it didn’t look much more appealing than
Mariah Carey’s Glitter. Both movies follow a pattern set by Julia Stiles’ Save
the Last Dance, another movie that defied expectations while becoming one
of the biggest opening January movies back in 2000. On the other hand, Dirty
Dancing won’t have as much of an appeal to the urban market, as those movies,
and it combines the choreography with the teen romance of recent flops like Chasing
Liberty and Win a Date with Tad Hamilton. Plus there’s still
the pall of musical flops like Lambada and last year’s From Justin
to Kelly hanging over this movie’s chances of finding an audience.
Fortunately, the remake looks like it could target more than just teen girls,
and older women will remember the original Dirty Dancing, and be interested
in how it’s been reinvented and combined with Latin salsa dancing. There was
even a preview for the remake on the recent DVD special edition of the original
movie.
Havana Nights might also get some added interest from the
rather large yet sorely neglected Hispanic population of the United
States, especially considering Diego Luna’s status. With the majority
of this audience being devout Catholics, some may feel a bit obligated
to see The Passion of The Christ this weekend instead. Still,
younger girls and teens will have little interest in the historical
epic, and Dirty Dancing will offer them something a bit more
fun and the crossover audience between the two movies will be scant.
Artisan Films bought the rights to the original movie, and then co-produce
the film with Miramax, but Dirty Dancing is the first movie released
by Lions’ Gate Films after buying Artisan last Fall. Unfortunately, this also
means that the promotion for the film has not been as strong as some of the
other new movies, so it will be relying heavily on its name brand to sell itself.
With the name brand value of one of the biggest crowd-pleasing movies of the
80’s and a romantic theme to attract a female audience who has had nothing
but silly teen girl fare, this Cuban romance might find an audience despite
having negligible star power. Although it might have a hard time winning over
the skeptics, Dirty Dancing looks like this weekend’s only date movie,
and intrigued audiences should help it make between $7 and 9 million this weekend.
