Mike Meyers hosts The Gong Show revival as “legendary” comedian Tommy Maitland
Mike Meyers (Wayne’s World, Austin Powers) is hosting The Gong Show, but you might not know it. In a new trailer for the game show revival from Sony Pictures Television, we get to see British host “Tommy Maitland.” In reality, however, it’s Meyers, who made his debut as the character last month on a Will Arnett-hosted episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live. You can check out that first appearance in the second player below.
“The Gong Show is back! Hosted by comedian Tommy Maitland and executive produced by actor/comedian Will Arnett. Every episode will celebrate unusually talented and unique performers on a primetime stage. A revolving panel of judges featuring Hollywood’s hottest stars praise, critique and gong contestants in one of TV’s all-time great variety shows.”
In the trailer, we get to see some of the acts that will compete on The Gong Show, both good and not-so-good. We also get a look at some of the celebrity judges, including Ed Helms, Elizabeth Banks, and Ken Jeong.
The Gong Show first aired on NBC from June 14, 1976 through July 21, 1978. It went into syndication and played from 1976-1980 and from 1988-1989. The show featured amateur talent with all sorts of unusual performances. The prizes were generally weird or worthless. There were celebrity judges including Jamie Farr, Rip Taylor, Phyllis Diller and Rex Reed. The show was produced and hosted by Chuck Barris. Contestants would perform an act for the judges and weren’t allowed to end early or they were disqualified. If the judges thought the act wasn’t worth a prize, they would hit a giant gong to kick them out.
