Kerry Washington Will Star In Hulu’s Old City Blues

Earlier this year, Kerry Washington wrapped up her seven season run on ABC’s Scandal. However, Washington has already booked her next TV project with Hulu, and now she’s added an additional series to her lineup.

Via The Hollywood Reporter, Washington has agreed to star in and executive produce Old City Blues, a sci-fi graphic novel published by Boom! Studios/Archaia in 2011. Should the series move forward, it will be Washington’s second show on Hulu following her role in Little Fires Everywhere. Director Gore Verbinski is also attached to direct Old City Blues, while Arash Amel is slated to write the script, which is currently in development.

Old City Blues began as a web comic written and illustrated by Giannis Milonogiannis. The story takes place in 2048 in a city known as New Athens, which exists on top of the ruins of Greece. In this world, the New Athens Special Police are called upon to protect the citizens from high tech criminals, drug dealers, and rampant corruption in the political and corporate arenas. However, the city is thrown into chaos when the cyborg founder of the Hayashi corporation is brutally murdered. What initially seems like a case of cyborg persecution soon unravels into a larger mystery that leads the heroes into the wasteland known as the Old City.

As noted by THR, it’s unclear which character Washington will portray. However, it’s entirely possible that the lead heroes and the setting will be re-envisioned with an American audience in mind. However, this will not be Washington’s first comic book inspired project. She had a co-starring role as Alicia Masters in 20th Century Fox’s first two Fantastic Four movies.

Hulu has also lined up Chris Black (Outcast) to serve as the showrunner of Old City Blues, and he will executive produce the series alongside Amel, Washington, and Verbinski. Allison Davis is co-writing the script with Amel, and a writers room has already been assembled for the potential series.
