Outlander Season 3 Premiere Brought in Record Viewership for Starz

Outlander Season 3 premiere hits a record viewership for Starz

The Outlander Season 3 premiered to some impressive numbers this past Sunday. The Starz drama, based on the book series by Diana Gabaldon, hit a series record high viewership of nearly 1.5 million (1.49M) Live+SD viewers for the 8 p.m. premiere, and nearly 2.1 (2.09M) million Live+SD viewers on Sunday night over the total of the three airings. Outlander Season 3 premiered while millions of households dealt with the aftermath of two devastating hurricanes.

Based on historical Outlander viewing from the recently hurricane-affected markets, Outlander Season 3 viewership could likely have been roughly equivalent to that for the season premiere of Power season four. The Outlander Season 3 premiere episode performance of 1.49M viewers is the most at Starz for a season premiere after Power Season 3 (2.26M) and Power Season 4 (1.68M). The premiere night’s 2.09M beat the episode “The Wedding,” which has a viewership of 2.04M.

Outlander Season 3 picks up right after Claire (Caitriona Balfe) travels through the stones to return to her life in 1948. Now pregnant with Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) child, she struggles with the fallout of her sudden reappearance and its effect on her marriage to her first husband, Frank (Tobias Menzies). Meanwhile, in the 18th century, Jamie suffers from the aftermath of his doomed last stand at the historic battle of Culloden, as well as the loss of Claire. As the years pass, Jamie and Claire attempt to make a life apart from one another, each haunted by the memory of their lost love. The budding possibility that Claire can return to Jamie in the past breathes new hope into Claire’s heart… as well as new doubt. Separated by continents and centuries, Claire and Jamie must find their way back to each other. As always, adversity, mystery, and adventure await them on the path to reunion. And the question remains: When they find each other, will they be the same people who parted at the standing stones, all those years ago?
