Starz Plans Series Based on Mariah Carey’s Life

A drama series based on the life of singer Mariah Carey is in the works at Starz

A drama series based on the life of singer Mariah Carey (Glitter) is in the works at Starz, according to Deadline. The scripted drama that is has yet to be titled will be executive produced by Carey as well as Brett Ratner (Hercules). The series will be written by Nina Colman (Mahogany) and is set in 1986 New York City. It will reportedly tell the story of a bi-racial 16-year-old girl who rises to fame to become the biggest selling female musical artist of all time.

Colman will act as showrunner and will also executive produce. Stella Bulochnikov (Boss) will executive produce for Magic Carpet Productions, as well as Teri Weinberg (Ugly Betty) and John Cheng (Horrible Bosses). Mariah Carey did a docu-series called Mariah’s World, which she also executive produced for E!.

Mariah Carey began her musical career with songs like “I Don’t Wanna Cry,” “Emotions,” “Vision of Love” and “Someday.” She is known for her high register whistle voice. The pop star will return to Las Vegas for more of her residency and will tour North American with Lionel Richie. She starred in the critically-panned film Glitter in 2001. She voiced Mayor McCaskill in The LEGO Batman Movie, and appeared as herself in You Don’t Mess With the ZohanLee Daniels’ The ButlerPop Star: Never Stop Stopping (as herself) and played Kitty in the TV series Empire. She’ll appear next as herself in the upcoming film Girls Trip starring Regina HallQueen LatifahJada Pinkett Smith and Mike Coulter. Girls Trip opens on July 21, 2017.
