Game of Thrones Final Season May Not Air Until 2019

Prepare yourselves — the Game of Thrones final season may not hit HBO until 2019

Better enjoy the upcoming episodes this summer, because the Game of Thrones final season may not air on HBO until 2019. In an interview with EW, programming president Casey Bloys was asked if the final season would air in 2018 or 2019.

“Yeah,” he replied. “They have to write the episodes and figure out the production schedule. We’ll have a better sense of that once they [showrunners David Benioff and D.B.Weiss] get further into the writing.”

Bloys also spoke about Benioff and Weiss’ involvement with the prequel series, five of which are currently in development.

“They came into HBO with an idea for a show with a beginning, middle, and end, and they want to see it through,” he explains. “In conversations with them, they feel if their name is on the prequels — even in a passive way — it conveys some sort of expectation or responsibility. They want to enjoy the show as fans and don’t want to worry about the scripts or production issues. We were hoping to have their names on it out of respect for them, but we understand why they don’t want that.”

At the end of last season, Daenerys’ (Emilia Clarke) dragons and her immense army were finally on the way to Westeros, where Cersei (Lena Headey) has now become Queen after the death of her children. The Night King’s (Vladimir Furdik in season 6) army is heading south, and a battle appears to be imminent.

Though we don’t know exactly what’s coming before the Game of Thrones final season, Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark, tweeted this about season 7 last year:

“Just finished reading season 7, s**t gets REAL. I’d start preparing yourselves now… scratch that, nothing will prepare you for this… Holy BALLS.”
