Will There be a Big Little Lies Season 2?

Author Liane Moriarty open to the possibility of Big Little Lies season 2

The HBO series Big Little Lies is based on the New York Times number-one bestseller of the same name by Liane Moriarty. The dark comedy aired its finale on April 2 of this year, and now the cable network might be looking at a second season. Moriarity spoke to The Sydney Morning Herald (via Variety) about the possibility of Big Little Lies season 2.

“I have started to think about ways this could continue,” she told the paper. “The producers have asked me to see if I can come up with some ideas. I wouldn’t write a new book but perhaps a new story and then we’ll see what happens.”

Screenwriter David E. Kelley adapted the novel for the small screen, but left out the backstory for Zoe Kravitz’s character Bonnie, which might be a story for Big Little Lies season 2. “My original reaction was ‘What have they done? How have they left that out?’” Moriarty said. “But a lot of people have said that they could tell [what was Bonnie’s true story], there had been little hints and that you can take that away. It’s implied in her performances and some little lines. I think I might have preferred to have had it in there but I wouldn’t argue against it either. It also leaves open the possibility of season two.”

Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée (Wild, Dallas Buyers Club) from scripts by David E. Kelley (The Practice, Boston Legal), the Big Little Lies adaptation stars Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Alexander Skarsgard, Laura Dern, Adam Scott, Zoe Kravitz, James Tupper and Jeffrey Nordling.

Big Little Lies is executive produced by Reese Witherspoon, Bruna Papandrea, Nicole Kidman, Per Saari, David E. Kelly, Jean-Marc Vallée, Nathan Ross and Gregg Fienberg. Barbara Hall and Liane Moriarty produce.
