Ethan Hawke Could Return for Training Day TV Series

Ethan Hawke has been approached to reprise his big-screen role for CBS’ upcoming Training Day TV series

CBS is looking to bring some serious continuity to their upcoming Training Day TV series. According to a story today at Deadline, the network has approached Ethan Hawke about reprising his big screen role. Hawke starred opposite Denzel Washington in director Antoine Fuqua’s 2001 original and received an Academy Award nomination for his performance as LAPD officer Jake Hoyt.

Antoine Fuqua is also returning for the Training Day TV series, set to direct the pilot episode. Writer and former LAPD detective Will Beall (Gangster Squad) is attached to provide the script. (David Ayer, who wrote the original film, currently has his hands full helming August’s big screen DC Comics adaptation, Suicide Squad). Also returning for the Training Day TV series is producer Jerry Bruckheimer (Bad Boys, Pirates of the Caribbean), who will executive produce the show alongside Jonathan Littman (the CSI franchise), Fuqua and Beall for Warner Bros. and Fuqua Films. Bruckheimer previously produced Fuqua’s 2004 adaptation of King Arthur.

While the original film featured Denzel Washington as a corrupt cop guiding a straight arrow rookie (Hawke), plans for the new series call for the show to follow present day LAPD officers. According to the trade, Hawke’s Hoyt will now be a Deputy Chief and, as such, will have the ability to return throughout the series.

Ethan Hawke’s recent schedule has kept him busy with projects like the Spierig Brothers’ Robert Heinlein adaptation Predestination, Andrew Niccol’s drone warfare drama Good Kill, and Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini’s recent comedy drama Ten Thousand Saints. Coming up, he’s set to appear in writer and director Rebecca Miller’s Maggie’s Plan before reteaming with Fuqua and Washington for The Magnificent Seven. Also starring Chris Pratt, Vincent D’Onofrio, Haley Bennett, Byung Hun Lee, Jason Momoa, Matt Bomer, Peter Sarsgaard and Billy Slaughter, it’s slated to hit the big screen September 23.
