The CW Greenlights Wrecking Ball

The CW is greenlighting production on the Erin Brockovich-esque drama pilot “Wrecking Ball,” reports Variety.

And in other pilot news, “That ’70s Show” star Kurtwood Smith is among several actors joining the cast of the CBS comedy pilot “Worst Week.”

As for “Wrecking Ball,” Richard Hatem (“Miracles”) and Ross Fineman are executive-producing the hour. The project is from Fox TV Studios.

The tentatively titled drama revolves around a young politician from a well-known family dynasty. When his electoral ambitions are derailed by a scandal, a campaign aide — with whom he has a feisty relationship — convinces him to use his connections to help a cancer patient fighting the medical establishment. He and the aide are then inspired to open a law firm devoted to helping out seemingly lost causes.

As for “Worst Week,” Smith and Nancy Lenehan (“The New Adventures of Old Christine”) will play the parents of the lead character’s fiancee. Erin Hayes (“The Winner”) has also been cast as the fiancee.

Universal Media Studios and Hat Trick are producing the pilot for CBS. The comedy revolves around a man (Kyle Bornheimer) and his struggle to deal with his new family.
