Miranda Otto is the Latest to Head to Westworld

Miranda Otto is the latest name to join the cast of HBO and Bad Robot’s “Westworld.” The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that the Lord of the Rings star will join Sir Anthony Hopkins, James Marsden, Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, Thandie Newton, Rodrigo Santoro, Ed Harris, Shannon Woodward, Ingrid Bolso Berdal, Angela Sarafyan, Eddie Rouse, Kyle Bornheimer, and Simon Quarterman for the new TV series, inspired by the 1973 film.

Both written and directed by Michael Crichton, the original Westworld takes place in a future amusement park wherein visitors interact with androids in recreations of famous historical environments. When something goes wrong, however, the androids turn deadly.

Westworld received a sequel, Futureworld, in 1976 and was spun off into a short-lived series, “Beyond Westworld,” in 1980.

Otto, who recently starred on the FOX series “Rake,” will play Virginia Pittman, a woman described by the outlet as follows:

“Virginia Pittman [is] the head of the quality assurance department [and her] brutal honesty with her colleagues and ruthless efficiency in dealing with malfunctioning ‘property’ have made her a formidable and unpredictable power player in Westworld.”

HBO has already given the planned series a pilot commitment with Jonah Nolan directing the pilot and writing alongside his wife (and “Burn Notice” scribe) Lisa Joy.
