Jada Pinkett Smith Cast as Gangster Fish Mooney in Fox’s Gotham

Warner Bros. Television and Fox have announced that Jada Pinkett Smith has been cast in their comic-inspired series “Gotham” as the gangster Fish Mooney. An original character in the series, Mooney is described as follows: “A sadistic gangster boss and nightclub owner, Fish Mooney’s got the street smarts and almost extra-sensory abilities to read people like an open book. Imposing and hotheaded, she’s not one to be crossed.”

That name may sound familiar, but not because it originated in DC Comics’ classic titles, but because the previously-released character description for Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin mentioned that he in fact works for Mooney.

Based upon characters published by DC Comics, “Gotham” is a drama exploring the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon and the villains that made Gotham famous. Series regulars cast to date are Ben McKenzie as Detective James Gordon, Donal Logue as Detective Harvey Bullock, Zabryna Guevara as Captain Essen, Erin Richards as Gordon’s fiancee Barbara Kean, Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth and Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot (aka The Penguin).

Bruno Heller (“The Mentalist,” “Rome”) wrote the pilot script and will serve as executive producer on the series. Danny Cannon (“CSI,” “Nikita”) will direct and executive produce the pilot which is expected to air this fall.
