And The New Doctor Who Is… Peter Capaldi!

Just a little over two months after Matt Smith announced his departure from BBC’s popular science fiction show “Doctor Who,” having played the 11th Doctor for nearly four seasons, the BBC have already picked his replacement.

During a special half-hour program called “Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor,” airing on BBC One in the United Kingdom and BBC America in the States, it was announced that the 12th Doctor will be played by…

Scottish actor Peter Capaldi!

The 55-year-old actor is best known in the United Kingdom for playing the foul-mouthed political spinmeister Malcolm Tucker on the comedy series “The Thick of It,” a role he reprised in Armando Iannucci’s feature film debut In the Loop. Capaldi also directed the Oscar-winning live action short “Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life.”

BBC are clearly going a different route after going younger with Smith but Capaldi’s long career as a regular staple on the network makes him a strong choice. Capaldi will star as the 12th Doctor on the 8th season of the series, which presumably will air sometime in 2014.
