4 Reasons Why You’re Next Whimpered at the Box Office, And, Why You Should Be…

Lionsgate’s late-summer horror release, You’re Next, debuted over the weekend to $7 million (opening at number 6 on the box office chart) in spite of the film’s 80% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

We loved it.  As the aforementioned Tomato meter showed, most critics loved it, and the advance buzz – generated on nearly two years of festival hype while Lionsgate sorted out the logistics of the film’s release – was solid gold.

One could spin things positively and consider it a “win” for the fact that an indie horror film – in this case directed by Adam Wingard and written by Simon Barrett – was given a theatrical release (on nearly 2,500 screens) at all.  Still, You’re Next didn’t perform nearly as well as it should have in light of a fairly good summer season for horror (The Purge, The Conjuring), so what the hell happened?  That was the question brought up a number of times to me during some gatherings during the weekend.  We all want to see a great horror film do well for itself, but when it underperforms, you have to look at why.

Review: You’re Next

With the theatrical debut of the film, we’re re-posting our review from 2011.

Perhaps the most rousing screening of Fantastic Fest 2011 was You’re Next, the latest psychocharged collaboration of director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett that was snapped up by Lionsgate for distribution. I can see the urgency behind the acquisition. You’re Next is one of the best home invasion films ever made, a tight, firing-on-all-cylinders, hyper-violent and clever thriller that also simply stands as the finest horror flick of the year.

Here’s what you pretty much already know: A family reunion takes a turn for the worst when black-clad killers, armed to the teeth and wearing unsettling animal masks crash this gathering’s affluent, secluded home and begin bumping everyone off. What these invaders don’t know, is that there is an unlikely survivalist attending this party. She’s lithe. Resourceful. Australian. A serious ass-kicker. And she isn’t going down without a fight.

Shock Video Interview: AJ Bowen & Sharni Vinson of You’re Next

AJ Bowen, myself and Sharni Vinson collided in a Los Angeles hotel recently during a press day for You’re Next, opening this Friday, August 23rd, and we decided to have a bit of fun with the interview opportunity we were given.  (In the interest of full disclosure, Bowen and I are friends and can’t help but goof off from time to time – sorry, Sharni.)

After the jump, check out our video discussion in which the two discuss who stands a greater chance at surviving a home invasion, their time on set and more.

In You’re Next, during a family reunion getaway, the Davison family comes under a sadistic attack. When Crispian Davison (Bowen) brings his new girlfriend (Vinson) along to celebrate the wedding anniversary of his parents, the family’s evening together is shattered when a gang of mysterious killers begin to hunt the family down with brutal precision. Unfortunately for the killers however, one of the victims harbors a secret talent for fighting back.

Choice Cuts: Dissecting Home Invasion Films With Devin Faraci, Evan Dickson &

This summer has offered genre fans two home invasion horror films: The Purge and You’re Next (the latter opening August 23rd).  And that’s just on the theatrical film front.  On DVD and VOD, we’ve also seen the release of a few other titles in the home invasion sub-genre such as Cherry Tree Lane and Home Sweet Home.

So, what is it about this sub-genre that’s making it endure?  What are filmmakers getting right or getting wrong about it?  To answer some of these questions and to dissect a few select home invasion titles, I called upon colleagues Devin Faraci, Evan Dickson and Todd Gilchrist for the latest Choice Cuts group discussion.
