The 10 Best New York Horror Movies By Borough

The Big Apple has played host to some big monsters: serial killers, vampires, werewolves, ghosts, demons and even The Devil himself. What New York’s boroughs lack in civility they make up for in prime accommodations for creatures of the night, and after and evening of killing a blood spattered sidewalk is always a bodega manager’s hose away from being swept clean in the morning.

In anticipation of the Blu-ray/DVD release of Scott Derrickson’s Bronx-set Deliver Us from Evil, we’re running down borough by borough

Maniac Faces More Censorship Overseas

In addition to facing censorship issues in Japan, the Maniac remake is now being banned in New Zealand.  Of course, the mainstream press is latching onto the fact that this is significant considering Maniac star Elijah Wood starred as Frodo in The Lord of the Rings films…which were all shot in New Zealand.

According to a press release issued today, the horror remake has been classified as objectionable

Learn More About Rob & the Making of the Maniac Soundtrack in This Featurette

Hands-down, one of my favorite soundtracks of the year – hell, it’ll likely be my favorite soundtrack of the year, period – is Maniac.  Now available on iTunes, the score comes courtesy of a man simply known as “Rob.”  In a new featurette, get to know Rob and learn how the soundtrack came about.  You can watch the video inside.

Shock Interview: Maniac’s Elijah Wood On Reinterpreting the Original, Screen…

When it was revealed Elijah Wood had been cast in the remake of Maniac, fans of the William Lustig-directed original scoffed at the notion.  After all, Wood was half the size of “original Maniac” Joe Spinnell and, to some, the actor – who starred in The Lord of the Rings trilogy – arguably, wasn’t as threatening.  Still, he was icy and eerily unhinged in Sin City.  Would he be able to pull it off?  Combined with Franck Khalfoun’s direction, the answer was ‘yes.’  Wood was able to make Maniac his own.  Even though he’s not seen on the screen the entire time, as the film is shot mostly in POV, Wood’s presence is always there.

Shock Till You Drop spoke with the actor this week in anticipation of the remake’s Los Angeles theatrical debut (you can find it on VOD now) and found him very enthusiastic about the film.  Further, we discovered he’s well-versed in the nature of the genre business and opened up about screen violence, his character in Maniac and more.  Head inside for our discussion.

Shock Interview: Franck Khalfoun, Director of Maniac

Now playing on VOD and in select theaters in New York is Maniac, the bloody, rabid and slick remake of William Lustig’s ’80s film that was spearheaded by writer/producers Alexandre Aja and Gregory Levasseur.

The duo are, of course, best known for the French thriller High Tension but they also made a mark on the “American remake” scene with films like The Hills Have Eyes and Piranha.  With Maniac, they turned to a friendly face to direct: Franck Khalfoun, who had previously collaborated with the two on P2.

Maniac finds Elijah Wood delivering an eerie turn as Frank, a man who owns a mannequin shop by day and stalks and kills women by night.  His habits are interrupted when he meets Anna (Nora Arnezeder), a young artist he falls for.

After the jump, you’ll find our conversation with Khalfoun as he addresses the casting of Wood, the decision to shoot the film in POV, the atmosphere of the film and the dangers of “homage.”

Japan Butchers Elijah Wood’s Maniac So Teens Can See It

Franck Khalfoun’s Maniac remake is suffering some unkind censorship in Japan where the film has already received a theatrical release.

A Shock Till You Drop reader dropped us a line from overseas directing us to a blog post he penned which is generating some buzz in Japan.  It appears the censorship board there has sunk its mitts into Maniac, altering the picture at times around the scenes of graphic violence.
