Following the success of Chronicle, director Josh Trank’s future was up in the air.  Does he do a sequel?  The Fantastic Four reboot?  The Spider-Man spin-off, Venom?  Which project does he tackle next?  Who knows?  But the bottom line was: Trank was in a good place with lots of options.

Deadline is reporting he’ll – at some point – take on the video game adaptation Shadow of Colossus for Sony Pictures.  And what an undertaking this film is going to be.

Shock Till You Drop took part in an unconventional interview last week.  You see, we participated in a junket for Chronicle, however, we did it via Skype – which is not the norm.  Nor is it very comfortable, still, it all worked out and we managed to squeak out some information from director Josh Trank and stars Dane DeHaan, Michael B. Q&A: Director Joshua Trank Talks Chronicle

If Joshua Trank had his way, audiences on February 3 would go into theaters to see Chronicle knowing absolutely nothing about it.  Needless to say, that won’t happen, as the publicity machine must fire up and generate a modicum of awareness for the film.

This week, Shock was called to 20th Century Fox and treated to a series of clips from the upcoming film, hosted by Trank and Fox creative exec Steve Asbell.

Chronicle tells of three high school students (actors Alex Russell, Dane DeHaan and Michael B. Jordan) who, one evening, discover a hole in the earth.  Exposure to whatever it is that made said hole (those details are not being given yet) grants them extraordinary telekinetic powers that get stronger as they use them.  As the story goes on, the misfit of the group, Andrew (DeHaan), apparently taps into his dark side and things take a sour turn.

Brand New Clip from Chronicle, Plus, First Photo!

Today, Shock Till You Drop was one of the few members of the press invited to the 20th Century Fox lot to get a sneak peek at Chronicle, the film from newcomer Joshua Trank, who puts a supremely dark spin on the “superpowers acquired” formula and tells his story using the “found footage” technique.

A complete write-up of the day’s events, including some commentary from Trank himself, is forthcoming. What I will say is that the footage was incredibly impressive.  Chronicle was shot on a low budget, however, Trank, along with writer Max Landis, aspired for something with scope as they tell their tale of three high schoolers who develop telekinesis and the one loner who abuses his newfound power.

The film dabbles in some Akira territory, no doubt about that, there are also shades of Zapped! in the sense that these teens use their powers for a bit of silly business.  A sneak peek at what appeared to be a big showdown definitely had shades of the anime.  But what was striking was the visual FX Trank pulled off using the money he had.  I’ll get into it a bit more later.  For now, check out this new clip – that was passed along only to those outlets who attended the presentation today – and the first official still.
