Showtime Networks has fast-tracked the pickup of "The United States of Tara," a new 12 episode half-hour comedy series starring Academy Award-nominated actress Toni Collette (Little Miss Sunshine) as a wife and mother who suffers from disassociative identity (formerly multiple personality) disorder, it was announced today by Robert Greenblatt, President of Entertainment for Showtime. The comedy series, a co-production of Dreamworks Television and Showtime Networks, will delve into how a dysfunctional family, including Tara's working husband played by John Corbett ("Sex and the City"), copes with the various identities that may appear on any given day and range in age, temperament and even gender.

Academy Award-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody (Juno), who wrote the pilot, will continue to serve as a writer and one of the series executive producers along with Steven Spielberg, Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank of Dreamworks Television, and Alexa Junge. The pilot was directed by Craig Gillespie (Lars and the Real Girl).

"Showtime is known as the home of several shows featuring flawed main characters, and we welcome Tara -- and all her alternate personalities -- to the fold," said Greenblatt. "What a pleasure to watch Diablo Cody and Toni Collette work together, a combination of inspired writing and acting that raises this show from just a curiosity to a compelling examination of a modern family. It is our distinct pleasure to also work with Steven Spielberg, Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey, and all the talented people at Dreamworks Television."

"The United States of Tara," which will begin production in Los Angeles this summer, marks the 11th primetime series to join Showtime's lineup of original programming, including "The Tudors, Dexter," "Weeds," "Californication," "Secret Diary of a Call Girl," "Brotherhood," "This American Life," "Tracey Ullman's State of the Union," "Penn & Teller: Bullsh*t!," and "The L Word."

I really liked Juno and Diablo Cody is a character herself (I wonder if she'll ever star her own TV show...). both interviews I saw on Letterman hints this on her future.

But it seems I've read about this series before, long time ago... Am I right or this is kinda old news (the existence of the series, not Showtime pinking it up)

The pilot was shoot a while back and then the show got screwed over by the writers strike. The prospect of the series is old news, however, the show becoming a reality is brand new, and I am very excited to hear it.

Hmmm, now a TV show version of Juno. Great. What a waste of an Oscar. Cody should go back to stripping.

Let's hope Diablo can do more than merge snarky blogging speak into a screenplay ala "Juno" and "Jennifer's Body". We'll find out soon how quickly those 15 minutes are up.

"Dysfunctional" is the most overused word when it comes to TV. I just can't stand seeing it in the description for just about every series.

I will give this show a go (as long as there's no "recorded laugh") because Toni Collette is great. I just wish they'd hold off on the "dysfunctional" description.

Yeah, that sounds exactly like the premise of Juno. And when Spielberg did Jurassic Park it was Jaws on land.

what the hell is with people complaining about everything? the complaints don't even make sense anymore?

And why is she a one hit wonder all of a sudden? If she makes 5 movies that all suck after Juno then go ahead and say it, but seriously, what the hell is wrong with everybody? Dig the sand out of your vaginas and try to enjoy yourselves.
