James D'Arcy is the Lead in Virtuality

May 28, 2008

James D'Arcy will play the lead in "Virtuality," Fox's two-hour pilot from "Battlestar Galactica" mastermind Ronald D. Moore, UMS and BermanBraun.

The sci-fi show, to be directed by Peter Berg, is set aboard the Phaeton, Earth's first starship, on a 10-year journey to explore a distant solar system. To help the crew endure the long trip, NASA equips the ship with advanced virtual reality modules, allowing them to assume adventurous identities and go anyplace they want.

Brit D'Arcy ("Churchill at War") will play the ship's psych officer, who produces the virtual reality shows.

Interesting the similarities between this and "Dollhouse," especially considering "Dollhouse" creator Joss Whedon is such a fan of Moore and "Galactica."

uh... what? Dollhouse is about "a group of men and women who can be imprinted with personality packages, including memories, skills, language—even muscle memory—for different assignments. When not imprinted with a personality package, they are mind-wiped, living like children in a futuristic dorm/lab dubbed the Dollhouse, with no memory of their assignments—or of much else."

How is that similar to this at all?

I think just the basic "people living simulated lives" premise, but other than that, very different.

This actually sounds good - it would definitely be cool to see them reach the solar system 10 years from the pilot, then spend like five years there, or they could just cut it off when they get there.
This could easily go wrong though - using too much special effects, most of which look fake, and the stories - if it centers around the virtual stories I don't think it'll be interesting... and it probably will since the title is Virtuality... and if they don't face problems getting to the solar system this could be just pointless. It totally depends on the writing, acting, and special effects (but then again, what show doesn't?)...
Never watched Battlestar Galactica, so I don't know if they're similar or what not... but this show sounds original (the going to discover a new solar system)

So he's borrowing the holodeck from his days on Star Trek?

the show sound good, sure is taken by star trek but the twist is good. I mean realizing that ye spend ye whole life in a virtual world, not knowing that it all fake.
