Exclusive: George Lucas' Red Tails in '09?

Some of the biggest excitement surrounding this year's ShoWest convention was the fact that George Lucas himself was appearing to present footage from his upcoming animated feature Star Wars: The Clone Wars at Warner Bros.' "The Big Picture" presentation.

ComingSoon.net had a very rare once-in-a-lifetime chance to sit down with Mr. George Lucas after the Warner Bros. presentation and we talked to him about the animated feature, the series and the future of "Star Wars." As a brief taster for that interview, we found out how things were going on Red Tails, the film he's producing about the Tuskegee Airmen, the first all African-American pilot squad during World War II. With all the work that Mr. Lucas has been doing on his two upcoming television shows, we wondered about his future working in film and if he still had time to work on the war epic written by John Ridley.

"As a matter of fact, I'm working on it tomorrow," he told us, much to our surprise. "We're getting towards a script, and probably start shooting before the end of the year, and it should come out next year, maybe. That's probably going to be the last movie I do, apart from my own movies, but my own movies are going to be more esoteric and probably will come and go in a week and be in one or two arthouses. It's basically the same as what Francis (Ford Coppola) is doing."

Look for our full interview with Mr. Lucas next week--it's a good one and you won't want to miss it! Star Wars: The Clone Wars opens exclusively in theaters on August 15, followed by the launch of the animated series sometime in the fall.

wow, sounds good.. I just can't wait to watch Clone Wars - both in theatres and on TV - and I bet Red Tails is gonna be good. Actually, I'm gonna be anticipating all the new GL films; it's gonna be interesting to see if the man stil has some talent and if he's capable of making small, art-house flicks without any exaggerated special effects or wooden acting. :)

Just make Star wars episode VII, VIII, IX, we don't care about anything else you do.
Also let some one else direct them like you did on Empire Strikes Back.

Well im glad to see thatheis directing other projects he seems to like Wolrd War 2 if you go by the Indy films. Plus he is a good story teller, just needs to get dialogue down. lol

I also hope that Lucas does the next Star Wars trilogy. It should be based on the Heir to the Empire book series. It would be incredible to see Grand Admiral Thrawn come to life!
Just DO NOT use any more of those accursed Snoopy-like Federation robots, Mr. Lucas. They were absolutely terrible!

Yes Lucas, yes...please start working on your "own" movies...you know...the ones you say no one will want to watch...the experimental ones, you know? We've waiting years for those, so come on. Can't wait to see what Red Tails looks like...and note to retards over at IMDb....Lucas is NOT directing this film, he never stated that he was...he's just producing it. I swear the folks over on the IMDb boards keep insisting that he's directing it...

But The Tuskegee Airmen(1995) was such a good film. I don't need another one.

I am really looking forward to all of George Lucas's projects. Red Tails sounds really good and of course, there's Star Wars.

I, on a personal note, do not think that there should be future Episodes. None of the original actors could come back and the series ended on a really good note.

Uriahsteel, I also do think that the Heir to the Empire books would be interesting films, but I don't think that it would carry the same grandeur that the original series holds. I don't think that many of the post-Empire books could stand alone as films. They are good as books, but they wouldn't be as powerful as the six movies. Return of the Jedi needs to be left as the final Episode.

Once the animated and live-action series both end, Star Wars on-screen should end. I would hate to see something so wonderful be completely ruined by overfranchising. Let the studios end it with dignity. I have too much respect for Star Wars.
