Achieving the Look of Fantastic Mr. Fox

Even among animated films, Fantastic Mr. Fox looks unique. In a field dominated by computer generated animation, Wes Anderson's new film stands apart even from other stop-motion movies.

Anderson began creating this unique look long before a single set was built, or an anthropomorphic fox was posed in front of a camera.

"We started by developing a color theory for the film," explains Nelson Lowery, the film's production designer, "It was a limited color palate, quite unusual for an animated film. There was no blue or green. [It was mostly] autumnal colors."

This posed a slight difficulty for the team. "When you make a palate like that, when you interject grey it would become a new color. While grey would just be grey in any normal movie, once it's...

CS Video: Richard Curtis on Pirate Radio

The history of rock 'n' roll was forever changed in the '60s by the British Invasion, and the influence of bands like The Beatles and The Stones and The Who and The Kinks and others are still felt today. And yet, in England, the government-run radio stations only allowed an hour of popular music on air a day, forcing music DJs to take their show to the sea, broadcasting rock music from boats off the coast of England 24 hours a day for anyone who wanted to listen.

That's the musical history at the center of Pirate Radio , the new ensemble comedy from Richard Curtis that features an illustrious cast including Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bill Nighy, Nick Frost, Rhys Darby ("Flight of the Conchords") and Rhys Ifans and others playing DJs on just such a ship.
Total Film has published a new interview with director Guillermo del Toro in which he talks about developing The Hobbit and it's sequel . The interview is broken up into 10 pages, but towards the middle it starts getting interesting when he begins talking about the creatures in the film.

Here's just a sample:

It’s actually still active: we’re finishing his colour palette and a little bit of the texture. But the bulk of the design took about a year, solid. It’s because of the unique features of the dragon.

Early in production I came up with a very strong idea that would separate Smaug from every other dragon ever made. The problem was implementing that idea. But I think we’ve nailed...
