The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Since fans have been told that the Extended Edition is coming, there's no duplicity here and no one should have any trouble figuring out which version (or versions) they want in their collection. Whether you're getting it now or later, it's a good bet that "The Hobbit" is going to be a disc that gets played for a long, long time to come.

Kung Fu Panda 2 (Blu-ray)

"Kung Fu Panda 2" is a movie that is fun for both adults and children. It's one of those rare family films that are truly enjoyable for the whole family. And even if you don't have kids it is worth checking out.

The Rocketeer (20th Anniversary Edition) (Blu-ray)

As you can tell I love this movie and I could go on and on about it. I think anyone writing a comic book movie, or a comic book for that matter, should watch this for inspiration. And I'm glad that it's finally getting a Blu-ray release from Disney. It has had a cult following the last 20 years, but maybe a few more fans will discover it. Who knows? Maybe we'll get a remake or a sequel one day. If "TRON" can get a sequel, anything is possible.

Cowboys & Aliens (Extended Edition) (Blu-ray)

"Cowboys & Aliens" is a great popcorn flick. It has cool effects, cool stars, and a fun plot. It's well worth checking out.

The Debt (Blu-ray)

"The Debt" has problems with its pacing as it attempts to tell concurrent stories in past and present, but Helen Mirren and Jessica Chastain give such fantastic performances in their respective timelines, it ultimately works quite well in terms of drama and suspense.

The Hangover Part II (Blu-ray)

"The Hangover Part II" is decently funny, but it's also a colossal waste of time. The filmmakers have put so little effort into creating something new even the jokes suffer because we already know how it's all going to come out.

The Help (Blu-ray)

A bit rambling at times, "The Help" may have been improved by a director a little more willing to cut down his own script, but the fantastic performances make it a real winner of a movie, one that entertains and moves you regardless of gender, age or race. For a fairly inexperienced director working from much loved material, that's quite an achievement.

One Day (Blu-ray)

I can't say if fans of the book will be happy with this, but I can say if there are fans of romantic tearjerkers out there, then "One Day" should please them. Fans of Anne Hathaway should be pleased, too. But if you're looking for lighter fare, I recommend you pass on this one.

The Adventures of Tintin: Season One

If you see the movie and want to get more Tintin adventures, this cartoon series is something you'll want to pick up.....along with the comics, of course.

Conan the Barbarian (Blu-ray 3D)

Ultimately, for all its grinning and gurning, "Conan the Barbarian" is an unremarkable piece of fantasy adventure filmmaking. It is completely uninterested in advancing the style of these sorts of things in any way. Nispel would much rather spend his time thinking up as many manly exploits as he can to fill his brief running time. If that's the sort of thing you like, "Conan" is right up your alley, but it doesn't offer much to anyone else.
