Shortly after today's update on the status of the future of the Independence Day franchise, Deadline has revealed that Dean Devlin is set to make his directorial debut with a brand new global disaster project. Skydance Productions has picked up the rights to an untitled screenplay written by Devlin and Paul Guyot.

Plot details are few but Devlin's involvement suggests something in line with previous blockbusters that the talent has written and produced like Independence Day and Godzilla.

Devlin will also produce alongside Ellison and Dana Goldberg, Marc Roskin and Rachel Olschan.
