Michael Fassbender has plans to star as Cu Chulainn, the Irish warrior of Celtic mythology, Variety reports. He's teaming with Ronan Bennett (Public Enemies) to work out the screenplay.

The legendary tales of Chulainn date back to roughly the 7th century and were collected in Ireland's "The Ulster Cycle" in the 8th. An epic warrior, many of Chulainn's more famous tales focus on the character at a much younger age than Fassbender. As such, details are few as to which Chulainn tales might become the focus of the film version.

Fassbender is coming off a busy 2011 and already appeared in this year's Haywire. He can soon be seen on the big screen again in Ridley Scott's Prometheus and is expected to re-team with his Hunger and Shame director, Steve McQueen, for 12 Years a Slave. He's also expected to reprise his role as Magneto in an upcoming sequel to last year's X-Men: First Class.
