Summit Entertainment's The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1
has earned a massive $283.5 million worldwide since opening internationally on Wednesday. Based on the Stephenie Meyer book, "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" grossed $139.5 million domestically from 4,061 theaters this weekend and added another $144 million overseas for the five days in 54 markets. The $139.5 million domestic opening is the fifth-best ever, trailing just The Twilight Saga: New Moon
's $142.8 million, Spider-Man 3
's $151.1 million, The Dark Knight
's $158.4 million and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2
's $169.2 million. The $283.5 million worldwide opening is the 10th largest ever and a franchise best, passing up "New Moon's" $274.9 million launch.
Directed by Bill Condon from a Melissa Rosenberg script, the $110 million-budgeted "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Peter Facinelli, Ashley Greene, Kellan Lutz, Jackson Rathbone, Elizabeth Reaser, Nikki Reed and Billy Burke. "Part 2" will hit theaters on November 16, 2012.
Warner Bros. sequel Happy Feet Two
debuted to a disappointing $22 million from 3,606 theaters domestically. The 2006 original earned $42.7 million its first weekend. The domestic outlook for the film does not look great, as another three family films open this week, including Arthur Christmas
and The Muppets
Alexander Payne's new film The Descendants
, starring George Clooney, also made it into the top 10 with $1.2 million from just 29 theaters, an average of $41,379 per location. The film has collected $1.3 million since its opening on Wednesday in five theaters.
dropped two spots to third its second weekend, bringing in $12.3 million to push its total to $53 million. It was followed closely by Sony's Jack and Jill
, which added $12 million its second weekend for a total of $41 million.
DreamWorks Animation's Puss In Boots
rounded out the top five with $10.7 million its fourth weekend. The "Shrek" spin-off has earned $122 million so far domestically. Universal's Tower Heist
, meanwhile, placed sixth with $6.96 million its third weekend for a total of $53.4 million.
In its second weekend, Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar
earned $5.9 million. The Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer has brought in $20.7 million so far for Warner Bros.
