UPDATE: EW has updated their item and have removed any mention about Cruise's representative saying he won't be involved. Does this mean that Cruise is still interested?

Vulture reported this week that Paramount Pictures has made offers to both producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott to follow their classic Top Gun with a sequel that would be written by Christopher McQuarrie and would feature Tom Cruise in a smaller role.

Entertainment Weekly confirmed with McQuarrie's rep that he has indeed been approached to write, though Cruise's representative says the actor will not be involved with the sequel.

Bruckheimer told MTV back in June that "the aviation community has completely changed since we made the movie a long time ago. So we have to find a way in and how to incorporate the Maverick character into it."

With Cruise not on board, the question is whether another actor will take over the Maverick role or whether the character will be written out.

McQuarrie's credits include The Usual Suspects and Valkyrie. He's got The Tourist coming this December and also wrote the Wolverine 2 script.
