The Hobbit Targeting a June Start

January 6, 2010

The Hobbit films will start shooting this June in New Zealand, reports Production Weekly. Production on the Guillermo del Toro-directed pics will take about 14 months.

While the production will probably not get the green light until MGM resolves its financial situation in the coming weeks, the studio and New Line/Warner Bros. have been targeting December 2011 and December 2012 releases for the two installments.

Andy Serkis, Ian McKellen, Hugo Weaving and Cate Blanchett are expected to reprise their roles from "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy in The Hobbit.

The only thing I want in this world is for Peter Jackson to direct these movies instead of Del Toro. Literally the only thing in the world. Why settle for an impostor when you have the absolute master right there?

Maybe the injustice of Andy Serkis not getting an Oscar nomination will be corrected this time around...

Peter Jackson did a bad job with King Kong, so to hear someone think he did a bad job with Lovely Bones is no surprise to me. He's this generation's George Lucas. I'm glad Del Toro is directing The Hobbit.

I just really hope they use Ian Holm again. Either that or they clone Ian Holm for the role. I know there is a 60 year gap between Hobbit and LOTR but Bilbo is supposed to look exactly the same because of the ring. Gandalf even says it in the beginning of LOTR; "My god, you haven't aged a day!"

I think it's a bit unreasonable to call Peter Jackson the George Lucas of his time, even if we're operating under the impression that both Lovely Bones and King Kong were failures. I mean, the guy made Heavenly Creatures and Braindead before Lord of the Rings... unless you were under the impression that the Trilogy was just an independent project that made it big and turned him into one-hit wonder...

All directors have both their proudest moments and their weakest ones, as well. For example: Spielberg "Jurassic Park" "The Lost World: Jurassic Park 2".

It would be awesome to see Ian Holm reprise his role but unless they decide to use the youth enhancing magic (be it CGI or cosmetics) I'm afraid they'll try to go on and cast some one who looks similar to him.

My fear is that this movie is taking to long to make. Do people who haven't read the books know that The Hobbit is the prequel to LOTR? I sure hope so and I guess they will advertise it as such. Keep in mind that Peter Jackson is still a producer and this is his baby, he will have a lot of control in the making of these movies.

Gzow, "The Hobbit" is NOT the prequel to LotR. It's a TOTALLY different book. Different tone, different pace, different target audience. And so will be the movies.
