Who are They Eyeing for Khan in Star Trek 2?

Just last night, we posted an interview with Star Trek director J.J. Abrams in which he said he won't know if he'll direct the sequel until the script is done, which may be a while.

But what if he does return? And Khan is the villain? ComingSoon.net is hearing a pretty juicy rumor that they already have a favorite who they'd like to play Khan if that happens.

Who do they think could portray the character made famous by Ricardo Montalban in the 1967 "Star Trek" episode "Space Seed" and 1982 feature Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan?

Nestor Carbonell, who plays Richard Alpert on the J.J. Abrams-executive produced ABC series "Lost."

Now, before you go shouting Nestor is KHAAAN! There are way too many variables right now, including the fact that the Khan character may not even be in the sequel. We just know that if they started filming today, he would be their man.

WHY DOES KHAN NEED TO BE IN THIS?

Jeez, sorry for shouting, but honestly? Why are they even considering using Khan again? You go to all this trouble to "reboot" (and some what half-@$$ed at that) and all they think of is reusing characters and ideas from past films? Really? Is that all you have up your sleeve Abrams?

Look, I really enjoyed the new Trek, its characters and its production design. And just like the next guy, I think Khan's an awesome bad guy. But really--come up with new stuff.

We don't need more retreads. Leave Khan alone.

and yes I realize that there is no story or script for Star Trek XII, but it still irks me that people are even thinking about including Khan in the film.

Star Trek sequel will be great regaurdless of Kahn, what is more important is that J.J. directs.

If they do use Khan, I totally approve of that casting choice.

i am ok with Khan, just introduce him in another way. Have him be an ally for the 2nd film and set him up to be a villain in the 3rd. just spit balling ideas. like the casting idea though

What rumor? From whom? This seems to me to be just another fan casting call. Last I heard there was neither a script or a director attached to the sequel, which makes speculation on possible villains and who may be playing them premature to say the least. I can't accept this as anything more then wild speculation and someone's wishful thinking.

While I'm sure that Kahn will eventually make an appearance, I doubt it'll be in the sequel if for no other reason then because he was the villain of the second film in the original franchise. My money would be on the Klingons or something similar. Something to establish the new canon and how the reality-warping events of the first film effects the different cultures and politics.

Personally, I think Montalban portrayed Kahn very well, and I would be wary of seeing someone else try to do better. It may be interested to see another fan favorite show up from the old series though, like Harry Mudd.
