Universal Near Deal for 47 Ronin Director

Variety reports that Universal Pictures is near a deal with Carl Eric Rinsch to make his feature directing debut on 47 Ronin, the epic period samurai swordsmen tale that will star Keanu Reeves.

Rinsch, who shoots commercials for RSA, has been on Hollywood’s radar. RSA-owners Ridley and Tony Scott previously had discussions with Rinsch to direct the Alien prequel until Ridley Scott decided to return to the franchise he launched.

Written by Chris Morgan (Wanted), 47 Ronin tells the famous fact-based story of a band of samurai swordsmen who avenge the death of their master in 18th Century Japan.

The trade adds that the movie will mix the fantastical elements of films like "The Lord of the Rings" with battle scenes on the order of Gladiator and 300.

I am getting a little weary of every historical action film being compared to 300. We need original concepts not copies.

Why is Keanu in this? Because he is bankable and likable and look at his track record, Speed, The Matrix(s), Constantine. Hit after hit this man makes. plus since he sucks he comes cheap and they can focus on the effects more.

Well if tom cruis can be the last samurai,it stands to reason that keanu can be the 47th ronin lol but perhaps he is the "one" to
"point" this "break" from historical accuracy

This movie sounds extremely cool. I've been looking forward to it since I first heard about it.

the original is very good. A Japanese classic actually. Skip this Keaneu Reeves trash, most insulting remake ever, white people shouldn't be in remakes where there are NO white people in the original. Unless it is something like the departed where they change cultural time and location. possibly it could be converted into a mod-western.

Hello idiot, it's not going to be a remake, as the article clearly tells you. So, all your "whitewash" crying was over nothing and more insulting than any movie. Learn. To. Read. Before. Commenenting.

Why can't they go for Japanese actors that have average to great proficiency in English like Ken Watanabe and Hiroyuki Sanada? Both were in The Last Samurai and have proven they are great actors outside/inside of the Samurai period drama/action films (Watanabe in Memoirs of A Geisha and Sanada in The Twilight Samurai).
