Zoe Saldana on Avatar, The Losers & Star Trek

Zoe Saldana is having quite a year. This summer, Star Trek blew up the box office and on December 18, the much anticipated Avatar hits theaters.

We talked to her briefly at the DVD/Blu-ray release party for Star Trek.

"I'm feeling great, but there's a part of me that's happy it's almost over so I can finally take off my heels," Saldana joked. "Between guns, a little dress and heels I'm a little tired physically, but I never get mentally tired of talking about these projects I've been a part of because it's every actor's dream to work with amazing directors especially for a woman in Hollywood and film. To get to work with great directors that actually write great roles for women is not only a treat, but it's something that should happen more often."

After Avatar, Saldana will be seen is The Losers playing Aisha.

"She's a blend of Uhura and Neytiri," Saldana said. "Toss in a couple of guns and some tattoos - she's really badass. At times I was kind of afraid of her. I don't know why it's a PG-13 movie to be honest."

Although she kills a lot of people in The Losers, the young actress said playing Neytiri in Avatar was the more difficult role.

"In my entire career, that was the most challenging role I've ever played. It just challenged me from head to toe. Not only did I have to become more in tune with my body and train for seven months to do this role, but it was also a mental thing where I had to dehumanize myself because I was playing a different species--not of a different country. I was from a different planet so it took a lot of time and it was the most amazing experience I ever had."

Four stunningly beautiful and talented actresses were wasted in ST09 and should have had more screentime. Jennifer Morrison only appeared at the beginning and we don’t find out what happened to her, Rachel Nichols was only in it for three minutes and we don’t find out what happened to her, Winona Ryder was in it for nearly ten minutes and was needlessly killed off and Diora Baird was nowhere to be found (except in a brief cut scene).

Dresden-you've been going around whining about the so called plight of these "four" actresses on just about every forum dealing w/Star Trek 2009. Will you shut the heck up? Uhura is part of the MAIN CREW. She GETS to be introduced in the first movie more extensively than any OTHER female-okay??? It's Kirk, Spock, McCoy, UHURA, Sulu, Chekov, and Scotty in that order-those are the MAIN CHARACTERS IN ANY STAR TREK-TOS or MOVIES. Once they're introduced to the movie audience sufficiently then your other poor actresses MAY get more screentime. Also idiot-Uhura didn't really get that much screentime either. shut up already. I'm sure Winona, Rachel, Jennifer, or Diora are complaining. There's NO WAY NO OTHER FEMALE WILL GET AS MUCH TIME AS UHURA, GET OVER IT. Unless, they're part of the main crew-which is not gonna happen in this movie because it's dealing w/the beginnings of the MAIN CREW.

I meant to say that Jennifer, Rachel, Winona and Diora are NOT COMPLAINING lol. They're glad they got Star Trek09 on their resume I assure you.

sandovar- guess every place needs their 'crazies.' It's like those people that agonize over a ballplayer's bad move...years after it happened.

There is certainly no cause for flaming. Making the creative decision to give key female characters other than Uhura a larger role is hardly anything new and hardly warrants being called an ‘idiot’, whether you would have made a different choice or not.

“There's NO WAY NO OTHER FEMALE WILL GET AS MUCH TIME AS UHURA, GET OVER IT..”
Don’t you mean ‘there’s no way another female will get as much time as Uhura’?
Canonically speaking, it most certainly is possible and has been done before.
Gene Roddenberry preferred to give other characters outside of the main crew just as much if not more screentime during the original series and in the earlier movies.

‘Once they're introduced to the movie audience sufficiently then your other poor actresses MAY get more screentime.’
These are very intelligent and talented actresses who by calling ‘poor’ can be seen as ignorant, tactless and even misogynistic.

All “arm chair quarterbacks” crack me up. What are your qualifications for your unequivocal pronouncements on what should have been? Make any movies lately or write a motion picture score?

Well until you do, I’m afraid you’re just going to have to sit back and enjoy the movie that’s delivered to you. Nothing wrong with respectful constructive criticism but your childish rants are laughable.
