Leonard Nimoy Talks Star Trek, Fringe

Leonard Nimoy recently said he feels the future of "Star Trek" no longer needs him, so when we talked to the actor at the Star Trek DVD/Blu-ray release party at the historic Griffith Observatory in LA, we asked him why.

"They have Zachary Quinto. I was useful to make the bridge between the original and the new and that's done," Nimoy said. "This cast of characters is in great shape. They're a wonderful, talented bunch of people and the chemistry between them is appropriate. They've got it! They know how to do it. They've done it well in this movie and they'll do it again well in the future movies. I think I served a purpose and I'm happy that I was in it."

According to Nimoy, he's not so sure he'll be asked to come back for the next film.

"It's not a question of whether I'd want to be [in the movie]. If I get a phone call I'll answer the phone, but I'm not expecting that call to come."

Although it's unclear if he'll appear in the upcoming films, Nimoy is enjoying working with J.J. Abrams on another project, Fox's "Fringe."

"The character of William Bell is described as a very wealthy and very intelligent and brilliant scientist," Nimoy said. "It was great fun to stand in front of the camera and say, 'I'm William Bell. Here I am.'" I enjoyed it. I committed to do three episodes. I have filmed the three - two of them have already aired. One will be on the air in the near future. We'll see a little bit more of William Bell and after that there is no more committment."

Whether they admit it or not, when J.J. Abrams, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman came up with the alternative reality idea, they automatically came up with a way to include William Shatner in the film series. As this is an alternative reality, this new James Kirk can go on to live a long, full, rich and happy life, get married and have a family. A flashforward of an old James Kirk played by William Shatner would suffice just like when Harrison Ford made a special guest appearance on The Indiana Jones Chronicles television series.

Dresden what happens if kirk does live a full happy life, what happens to picard when it comes to generations the 7th movie, that future could still happen for picard without kirk he wouldnt be able to complete his mission to stop soran so you never know kirk still could end up dead the same way.

reaper, what happens to Picard also happens in the original timeline. In this new timeline things will turn out differently for Picard, if indeed he ever gets born!

- "if he ever gets born"
you do realize that just now a million voices cried out, and were suddenly silenced?

Well, I think there can always be a place in a Trek film for Nimoy's Spock. If there's going to be sequels, the nostalgia from having old cast members back is quite refreshing. The question is whether they're too old to do it now..

It would be cool to base a script reuniting Kirk (Shatner) and Spock (Nimoy) one last time as a piece of the story! Then let the new guys take over...

forget everything!! everything thats ever happened in any star trek episode or book or spin-off series is no longer, everything has changed, once vulcan blew up, its effected every single thing thats ever happened in star trek!!
my favorite star trek episode was when the borg brought kirk back to life after generations and he ended up in picards time forever. a great read!!! pick it up!!

I love old Trek...I love new Trek. I think having Nimoy in this latest film was great, but can we all please MOVE ON. The old crew built an amazing legacy, but it is time for the new crew to carry the torch. No more cameos, no more time travel to the ST Retirement Community. Long live Gene's great legacy!!

Honestly, I'd like the 2nd movie to have ZERO cameos...give the new stars a chance to shine. HOWEVER, I think William Shatner NEEDS to have a major presence in the 3rd, like Nimoy did in the 1st movie.
Also, I would like a very young Jean-Luc Picard teased during a flash-forward.
