British actor Edward Woodward, best known for roles in 1973 cult classic The Wicker Man and TV series "The Equalizer," died on Monday aged 79.

His agent Janet Glass said the veteran of stage and screen had been ill for several months and passed away in hospital surrounded by members of his family.

Woodward played police sergeant Neil Howie in occult thriller The Wicker Man, a story of his search for a missing girl on an isolated island.

That part came in the wake of his appearances in the British spy series "Callan," Woodward's big breakthrough into television and movie acting.

He also played Robert McCall in the hit 1980s show "The Equalizer," for which he received a Golden Globe in 1987.

The actor's final on-screen appearance was earlier this year in the popular British soap opera "EastEnders."

I'm guessing the Equalizer remake movie wasn't far enough along for him to make a cameo? :(

Loved 'The Equalizer' growing up. Great actor, unfortunately not enough exposure here in the states.
Thanks for the memories. Condolences to his family.

Saddened by the new that Mr. Woodward has passed away. A true gentleman and an outstanding actor, both in TV, Movies and Theater. Back in the 80's I was on a train from Victoria Station in London. In front of me there was this smart dressed man, and during the journey we had a long chat about everyday things. I was most impressed by this chap, and thought nothing more of it. It was only after I got of the train did the lightening bolt hit me and I figured out I had spent the passed hour talking to Edward Woodward! I guessed he enjoyed the chat so much due to the fact that someone wasn't bothering him for an autograph as this was the time of the Equalizer show. Anyway, that's my memory of him.

RIP Edward, and thank you for so much excellent entertainment over the years. My thoughts are with you family.
