Sequel to Pure Country in the Works

November 15, 2009

The Hollywood Reporter says that country music singer George Strait will star in a follow-up to his 1992 film Pure Country for Warner Bros. Pictures.

A Pure Country Gift is directed by Chris Cain (Young Guns), who also helmed the first film. He co-wrote the new screenplay with his son, "Lois & Clark" actor Dean Cain, who also has a role in the film. The father-son collaboration is their first.

"'Country Gift" isn't a sequel, per se, but more of "a movie in the 'Pure Country' genre," Chris Cain said. The film is about three angels who give the gift of a beautiful singing voice to a baby girl.

"In her climb to fame and fortune, she breaks some of the angels' rules, so they take away her big voice," Chris Cain said. "Life has rules; if you follow them, life works. That's the moral of the story."

The lead is played by Katrina Elam, a country singer who is making her acting debut. She is played as a 9-year-old by Kaitlyn Dorff, daughter of Steve Dorff, who composed the music for the original "Pure Country" and does likewise for the new one.

Ive never seen the FIRST movie, but this seems at least different. The 'moral' is a bit naive, but I can see what they're getting at.

I've seen the first one, and it was pretty good for the kind of movie that it was.

This movie sounds like it should be on ABC Family or Hallmark channel.

So, is it a sequel or not...? Like someone else said, it sounds more like a spin-off. A sequel to the movie would be nice. Eighteen years later we revisit Strait and his wife, It works... But throwing some supernatural garbage into it doesn't seem right. Don't get me wrong, I like spiritual stuff, but when you make a sequel to something that had none, and then throw it in, you have a flopper on your hands. Keep it as "pure" as the other one. To me, it sounds a bit like Lean Rimes Christmas movie (10-13 years ago).

LOL! This sounds horrible. I remember the first PURE COUNTRY. My family loved that movie ;). But they'd have been better off doing a direct sequel than this garbage, which has to have one of the most hilarious plots ever :P. No way this ends up in theaters. Look for it to debut on Hallmark channel during 2010's holiday season.

I think that pure country is the best movie if you like country music like george strait and it has line dancing in it too.

I think that george strait made something out of himself because he loves making music for himself and his family too.

I caught the first years ago on cable, and really enjoyed it, to my surprise.

This doesn't really sound like a sequel, but just another film with George Strait in it.

It does sound like a Hallmark special though, which in itself isn't a bad idea.
