Guillermo del Toro Confirms Hobbit Cameo

November 9, 2009

TheOneRing.net says that The Hobbit director confirmed on their message boards that he'll be making a cameo appearance as a small monster:

I had a hand on the design of the creature and I will personally sculpt the appliances that will be applied on my face and hands. I used to sculpt the creatures for NECROPIA (my FX company) and I miss it a bit. I will have a line or two and die quickly.

Del Toro's comments were in response to a discussion on the boards about a recent German interview he did.

Jackson should definitely get a cameo.

When would a "small monster" appear in The Hobbit?

Yeah - when would a small monster appear? Can't think of anything that small in that book - Trolls, Wargs and dragons?? Not small. Goblin perhaps?

P.S. Wonder if they'll include the mountain trolls fighting when they get in the cave - I imagine that could be an immense scene!!

Well, the goblin caves in which gollum lived would probably have plenty of small goblinoids. I know it's been ages since I actually read The Hobbit, but I think the tunnels where he lived were inhabited by goblins and not orcs. In LotR they've already established the size range of orcs with some looking more like I would have imagined goblins. So who knows?

Also, the decision to spread the Hobbit movie over the course of two movies seems to indicate, to me, that they're going to probably vear away from the known Hobbit film and provide background filler, letting us know what's going in other areas of Middle Earth. While we're watching Bilbo and the dwarves trying to escape from the Elven stronghold, we might also see Gandalf, Saruman and the rest of the council pushing Sauron out of Mirkwood. So going in this direction, we might see more characters/situations than we are expecting and a "small creature" might have made an appearance in some other area.

If He's going to make a cameo as a small monster, he doesn't need any applicants.

It's been a while since I read the book too... one thing I wonder, and hope for, is that they put Beorn in the movie. He's the guy that turns into a bear (if I recall right). I think that he'd make a great addition to the cast of characters, especially in the battle of 7 army's part.
