Gerard Butler Joins Fiennes' Coriolanus

November 4, 2009

Gerard Butler will star in Ralph Fiennes' directorial debut Coriolanus.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Butler has signed to star opposite Fiennes in what is billed as a contemporary version of Shakespeare's Rome-set political and family drama.

Butler will play Tullus Aufidius, commander of the Volscian army from Shakespeare's play. He joins a cast that includes William Hurt, Eddie Marsan, Jessica Chastain and Vanessa Redgrave.

Written by John Logan (The Last Samurai), the film is scheduled to begin shooting in Serbia in March.

Does this mean we might actually see Butler in a good film for once?

By "contemporary version" do they mean its going to be set in the present day? I'm confused?

Well, the script comes from a promising writer, let's hope Hollywood doesn't feel the need to "improve" it. I do think Fiennes can do it justice. I'd like to see a modern Titus Andronicus with Hollywood producers on the menu.

The film mentioned above should be a taboo in Shakespearean world. Ruining a cast with beautiful but empty shots and BAD, BAD acting. You want a REAL modern Shakepearean revive? How about Richard III with Ian McKleine? Or the Australian version of Macbeth with a young Sam Worthington(underrated movie!)?
But anyway, Ralph Finnes directing......pretty good. And cast is decent
