Mark Millar to Direct Superhero Movie

Mark Millar, who created the comic books that Wanted and the upcoming Kick-Ass were based on, has announced that he is lining up a superhero movie that will mark his directorial debut. He posted the following on his official forums:

Bet you didn't see THAT coming, laddies and lassies!

But this is one of several big surprises planned for next year and you'll hear a bit more about this in February when we start to release details. What is it? Who is it about? Well, that's all a secret for now, but I learned a lot from Kick-Ass and love having the same creative freedom I have with comics when I work in cinema. I never want to be a studio bitch and go in there pitching for them to love me. The closest I came to this was a couple of calls regarding Superman, but pretty much none of my plans ever revealed as I didn't like the idea of anyone nicking them.

Similarly, I don't like the idea of asking for funding and justifying scenes with the money-men so I'm doing what Matthew Vaughn did with Kick-Ass and just making it outside the system with private investors. The financing is all secured and the movie stands or falls on how good I can make it, doing what Matthew did and just selling it once completed.

As you can imagine, I couldn't be more excited. More as it happens, but this might just beat out War Heroes and American Jesus as my follow-ups to the Wanted and Kick-Ass movies. Have two other pictures about to go into development (and Wanted and Kick-Ass 2, of course), but I think you need to scare the Hell out of yourself every once in a while and something totally new like directing should do the trick.

Which comic or graphic novel do you think he should direct?

Every time I read a quote from this guy I get the idea he's a bit of a prick. What is he directing? I dont really care because I haven't really been sold on anything he's been involved in. Wanted blew. My guess is this movie is going to be a smaller superhero that hasn't been done yet. And since he's a part of the DC universe I wouldn't be surprised if it's something like Wonder Woman or The Flash. Is Flash DC I forget?

He just said he's working outside the studio system, as in: it's an independant production. Considering that DC is owned by Warners, there's no chance in hell of this being one of their characters, because they'd never let anyone make a move of their characters outside their studio.

When I first saw this post my guess was that it was going to be wither War Heroes or American Jesus but he just put that to rest. Then I thought maybe Superman: Red Son or Old Man Logan but the studio comment killed that. I think that he very well could be directing his recently announced project with Steve McNiven entitles Nemesis.

You know, Millar has not worked with DC in years. Almost all of his work is done through either Marvel or their creator owned arm Icon. He has two projects at the 100% creator owned, indie publisher Image called War Heroes and American Jesus. He has yet to announce a publisher for Nemesis.

Millar is not a prick at all. He is actually an extremely humble guy he just likes hype when he talks so he can go over the top; much like many of his books do.

Lets hope his Directorial Debut is better than Frank Miller's diaster that was The Spirit.

Millar just loves to play the game. Whether that makes him a prick or not is arguable.

I'm pretty positive there was never a Superman project. Think about it ... he comes out and says that he is working on a Superman movie project, but the plot is super secret. And he's talking to well known established director, but that's super secret as well. As soon as I heard that, I told my roommate to give it six months and he would suddenly announce that the project had fallen apart due to creative differences or whatever. And that's exactly what happened.

He just likes to hype himself and his projects. Whenever he stops being talked about for a certain amount of time, he suddenly has a big announcement that's shrouded in mystery. And he comes across as a guy who loves to hear himself talk and always says stuff like "I don't want to be a studio *****" and things that he thinks make himself sound cool. Then he goes on about private investors. But if he's talking about private investors giving him millions of dollars, they can be just as much as a pain as a studio, sometimes even more. You still have to pitch to them and ask them to fund your film.

This is probably the same kind of thing as Superman. There are very few possibilities of what this could be, so it's probably just PR bull that he's created.

Whats the point of hyping up a project that probably won't even be out in 2 years???

Not looking forward to this. He can write comics, sure but has he proven he can direct? Let's hope he goes easy on the booz on the set. Well, hopefully it won't be a well-known property. He would do well to work with a creator-owned entity.

I hope its one of Top Cows titles. Both Witchblade and Darkness have been long rumored for the big screen. Would love to see Darkness especially, but if they did both could set it up for a cross-over movie.
