DreamWorks has acquired the film rights to the young adult book series "Wicked," according to Variety. Brothers Aaron and Matthew Benay (Brad Bird's upcoming 1906) have signed on to write the adaptation.

Written by Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguie, the five-book series centers on a young woman who learns she is a descendant of a powerful coven of witches. Complications arise when she falls in love with a boy who turns out to be a member of a rival coven.

The first two books in the bestselling series, "Witch" and "Curse," were published in 2002, followed by "Legacy" and "Spellbound" in 2003. The fifth book, "Resurrection," was published in July.

Never heard of the books. Doesn't sound too promising. It sounds like it's basically a witches version of Twilight. I'll pass.

Take a pinch of Harry Potter, a dash of Twilight, mix well, and serve with a hint of Gregory Maguire.

Lame! I totally thought it was the musical. Oh well, I'll probably end up seeing it anyway.

@WCB and @Rick: I too thought of the play Wicked, and I was like cool, great news. My girlfriends loves that play and I never have seen it. So I was thrilled. What a major let down.

Stephen, you do realize that Twilight is basically a vampire version of Romeo & Juliet, right? Plus, the first few books were written before Twilight, so...

Honestly, I had never heard of the Twilight books until the first movie was announced. And unless it has Joss Whedon attached, I'm not really into the vampire or witch soap opera thing, so I've never had any interest in either series.

So there's another book series besides the one the musical was based on? How confusing is that?!? I imagine they'll be changing the title.
