Adam Shankman (Hairspray) is signing on to direct and choreograph the feature adaptation of the Broadway musical Rock of Ages for New Line Cinema, says Variety.

The film will begin production by next summer and be released by Warner Bros. in 2011.

The musical's creator, Chris D'Arienzo, wrote the movie adaptation. Carl Levin, Matt Weaver, Scott Prisand, Tobey Maguire and Jennifer Gibgot will produce. Janet Billig and Hillary Weaver are executive producers.

The musical centers on two people who meet at the Sunset Strip club Rock of Ages, fall in love and try to stay together amid '80s rock anthems.

I hope they get Constantine to replay the lead role. In fact, I hope they get the entire OBC to be in the movie. I saw it RIGHT BEFORE one of the main characters(funniest in my opinion) was about to leave and it was A-MAZING! I just hope it's good, that's all I can say.

i also hope they get the original stage cast. although i dont think any of them had any experience being film actors before. but if they've excelled onstage, a few tips and tricks for working the camera and they would do extremely well.

Stage actors make GREAT film actors...it's much difficult on stage since not everyone can get a close look on you...but anyway I hope they do this because they LOVE the idea, not because they simply wanna follow Across the Universe

Sweet. I've never seen the play, but I'm a big 80s fan so I'll check it out.
