Variety is reporting that Chris Messina (Julie & Julia, Vicky Cristina Barcelona) will star in Universal Pictures' Devil, a horror-thriller based on an M. Night Shyamalan story that will be directed by John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle (Quarantine).

The film is being produced by Shyamalan and Sam Mercer. Brian Nelson (30 Days of Night) wrote the script.

Messina is set to play the lead role of Bowden, a sobered-up homicide detective. No other plot details have been revealed.

Filming is scheduled to start in Toronto on October 26.

UPDATE: The Hollywood Reporter says that Logan Marshall-Green, Jenny O'Hara, Jacob Vargas, Matt Craven, Bojana Novakovic, Bokeem Woodbine, Geoffrey Arend and Caroline Dhavernas will also star.

Thank God he's not directing. Everything after the Sixth Sense has been an unforgivable train wreck.

Sixth Sense is classic. I like the village. Although after that M goes to trash...oh well, I'll give him one more chance
