Columbia Pictures has acquired rights to remake the U.K. miniseries "Red Riding," and is negotiating with Steve Zaillian to write the script and Ridley Scott to direct, says Variety.

The project, based on four David Peace novels, will be distributed in the U.S. this fall by IFC. The studio has bought rights to the mini and the novel series.

The miniseries is a study of power and police corruption framed around the investigation of the disappearance of several young girls. For the film, the setting will be transferred from Britain to the U.S.

Scott and Zaillian previously collaborated on the films American Gangster and Hannibal.

Love Ridley Scott and all, but seriously, he's got about as much as what del Toro has on his slate. Man.

Has potential though.

Why? The miniserie was awesome. And Ridley Scott has lost his magic 20 years ago.

Please God stop remaking shows - this just shows how bad American writing is getting, adaptations, sequels, prequels and remakes: Life on Mars, State of Play and now this.

America looks like it needs some British writers there because all the best stuff is now coming from Britain. What's next, they're gonna do a movie on Skins?

Damn shame, I thought Ridley had more stones than that.

Also: how can they remake Red Riding? It's based on a true story. If it's not set in Britain in Yorkshire in the 70s, how can they make a film "based" on it in a different country and time? They should've just wrote a story like it and called it a different name. This is one Ridley Scott film I am not gonna see or buy on DVD

The miniseries was ****ing awful and already looked like a knock off of a Scott film. This is a bad move.
