Roland Emmerich on Independence Day 2

Latino Review got a chance to ask 2012 director Roland Emmerich if there's still a chance we'll see a sequel to 1996's Independence Day at some point. After all, the blockbuster made a massive $817.4 million at the worldwide box office that year. Emmerich gave an interesting response...

Dean Devlin and I are still set to make a sequel likely because we've found some sort of idea and we approached FOX and FOX has not quite figured out how to incorporate Dean's and my deal, and Will's (Smith) deal. Will wants to do it in some sort of a package they can live with. So it's just been in negations now since forever, and naturally FOX says "Why don't you do it without Will Smith?" I said Will is essential for us, for this movie and actually for the audience too. And, so, it's in limbo and lately the studios are fighting. Like gross players, and Will is a gross player and is probably the only gross player right now who's worth his gross. So we'll see what happens. I would love to do it..

Ummmm.....WHY?!!! Does every blockbuster that makes a crapload of money has to have a sequel. And plus, what kind of story can they tell for this?

Independence Day is my FAVORITE film. There are areas, cities & battles they should've add. So if they do another one, It has to be epic on a "global" scale. But it sounds interesting. So we'll see.

I agree with Fox. Will Smith is awful, and he'll want to put his no talent son in it as well.

Funny, This is the same Guy who when was approached not to long ago about the next Godzilla sequel he said ''Im not much for repeating myself'' or something along those lines.

Yet all of his movie's are pretty much the samething or same plot with the end of the world or heavy destruction.
This guy is a joke and should stop making movies.
I'll be shocked if this gets picked up with a high budget.
It'll be just like 2012 but with alien space-ships again.

"ID4" was probably the only movie I ever felt actually needed a sequel, and we never got one. Fox, back a dump truck full of money up to Mr. Smith's house, and do the darn thing!

I'm assuming the aliens will come back for revenge or send reinforcements. Hopefully the humans will have a better plan this time to defend their selves. I think both this movie and District 9 deserve sequels. I love this genre in film!

If they do ever get this movie rolling maybe we'll see a ground battle instead of just air battles.

Has anyone actually watched ID4 recently? It was cool when we were kids...but it pretty much blows.. like all of Emerich's movies..
