Heat Vision is reporting that Gary Ross will write the script for Venom, Columbia Pictures' "Spider-Man" spin-off, and may direct as well!

Ross is already writing Spider-Man 4 for the studio.

The site says that the studio had no comment on Ross writing the project and whether Topher Grace would reprise the role from the third film.

Avi Arad and Marvel are producing the movie.

I'm not exactly one of those Spiderman fans who condemned Sam Raimi and the studio for downgrading Venom to a mere nuisance rather than Spidey's ultimate nemesis, but I would see this film to see where they'd take the character.

I agree. SPIDEY 3 was not that bad, it was simply not as good as 2. But it was entertaining and technically awsome. In fact, I think Topher Grace did a OK job with the role. They should keep him for VENOM, so that people link both films, avoiding that annoying "reboot" thing that is being used EVERYWHERE!

I'm interested to see where there gonna take this movie because in spiderman 3 they basiccly showed the whole beggining and end of venom.

I am excited for this as well. I have always loved the idea of secondary characters and/or villains getting their own movies. I also agree that although Spider-Man 3 was not the best, it was watchable, and the only reason they should keep Topher Grace is continuity sake. He is cast as a serial killer in the new Predator movie, so why not keep him for Venom? Either way, I just want to see this made, along with Deadpool. There are so many characters that would be great for movies. Cable, Dr.Strange, She-Hulk, and so on. Same could be said for DC, Blue Beetle, Zatanna, Captain Marvel, Green Arrow (if that is still a go), Etc...

Okay first Ken Branagh and now Gary Ross. Has their careers hit the crapper this quickly they have to do this crap? Honestly-Elektra and Steel proved second string comic book characters shouldn't have movies. But of course since Deadpool is getting one, let's have another one that will suck.

Did Sony forget their original writers (the guys who wrote their #1 hit in America - ZOMBIELAND)?

How exactly would they bring Venom back? In the 3rd movie, he and Eddie exploded into nothing without a trace.

lets not forget that the whole comic-to-film craze started with a b-list character film adaptation. anyone remember Blade? oh, also, Iron man was also B list till his movie and civil war mail lined him...... i believe second tier characters can work wonders starring roles. anyone with me for Simon Pegg as Ant-Man?

I did not read the comics, but I understand that there have been other hosts for Venom after Eddie Brock. I imagine the spin-off would be the story of how the symbiote survived the explosion and found another host. I'm not sure how they would do it without Spiderman, but I guess we'll see.
